You missed the point though, the poll isn't about what people think is the most used character. People vote for their main character to get a relative number of who the most used character is.
You can't because you have a polling phenomenon called "Self selection"- it immediately invalidates the poll.
It's when your poll is tainted because the method you used to poll ensures only respondents with certain qualities decide to take the poll (I'm a quantitative political science graduate).
In this case, the self-selection is of relatively advanced players who are good enough to learn many other characters and play characters different than the tutorial player.So if everyone put their main, you'd naturally get less Batman than actually exists online. Most Batman players aren't on TYM, and being on TYM makes you less likely than the average person to pick up the basic tutorial character. That's the self selection. Batman is the most common because he's the tutorial character. TYM brings people up further than the tutorial, and they're less likely to need to stick with the tutorial character.
It's not that I'm missing the point, I just understand how data works.
