Okay recently i played in a fighting game tournament(doesn't really matter which but it was a naruto one) and i lost i lost badly it was partly because of 3 reasons which are debatable

1. i was nervous- i know i'm not alone to say when you first started playing games in public or against someone else you get this nervous heart pump at first than it is gone like no big deal

2. my controller had a tad bit of delay- the controller i used wasn't what i was use to(know kind of a bs excuse but idk what else as one of the three besides this)and when ever i did buttons it would eat an input or 2 and i'd do something completely different

3.my brain ideas made me move faster than i actually did- i play games with not much battle experience and only practice and i usually know what to do with my brain before i put it with my hands and i probably may have missed somethings while thinking of other things

alot of you are gonna chalk it up to nerves and i might agree but i just though i'd put it out there and see if i'm not the only one

being nervous is the problem, when you are nervous your brain sends signals to your adrenaline gland by your kidneys and your fight or flight mode is activated. basically your reaction time is faster and your fingers are pressing buttons faster than normal, which is why you can practice a combo all you want then when you get in game you may do your combo too fast and drop it. it also takes blood from your organs and redirects them to your muscles and heart. if you play sports you know this feeling and is why sometimes you are able to run faster, jump higher and think faster when in a playoff game than in practice.

this video explains it alot better than i can and can teach you quick ways to deal with it.

Really good explanation on the situation, is this the kind of thing you do to combat tournament nerves? Because i know from experience you can practice as much as you want for as long as you want but once you get thrown in the deep end all that practice goes out the window and you fall back to basic muscle memory tactics. For example i do tae kwon do as a sport and i find when i get really nervous i kick harder and have better reaction times and when the adrenalines pumping im fighting faster and harder than i do in practice. But my issue is is top thinking as much and just go almost auto pilot mode. I start doing stupid shit and run the risk of getting myself kicked in the head from a bad lack of judgement. Anyway i might have got s bit off topic but my question to you zyphox is what works for you? I see you have increased your performance drastically over the past few months and id just like to know a few things you do to help stop nerves before a match (i have a tournament this weekend and its my first time fighting in over a year)

It's amore, BABY.
I use the concept of "Impressions" I learned through Toriko.
Whenever I reach a top 8 at a major I use the "Ulimate Routine" and it all works out.

By imagining a scenario or event strongly enough, a person is able to cause an impression of that scenario or event strong enough that it actually occurs, whether that be imagining stress and forming an ulcer or imagining an attack succeeding and having it actually succeed. It is an entirely mental concept, but it increases one's focus and accuracy exponentially.

First, you need to imagine it! Just drive your impression!! Thoughts create power... and become energy.....!! Try to catch a cold in an instant then instantly heal it!! Use intense images to control your body...!! It's all up to you. It will all go how you imagine it...!! Have that conviction and create the impression!!

Believe!!
Eliminate all doubt...!!
Do not fear!
Clear all anxiety...!!
Whomever your opponent is... it's not that you can win... you've already won!!! Believe!!!!
The result will not alter!!!!

Unwavering "rhythm of victory"...!!!! The "image of winning" itself is the supreme routine!!!! Which is fitting for its name... "Ultimate Routine"...!!!!! Make that image a reality...!!!!

to answer your question i am always nervous before the match but as soon is says fight i remember that am playing a video game. you can't play with fear and to combat your nerves to capture that fear if this makes sense. also practicing and gaining experience in these situations by going to locals and regionals and majors helps you naturally build confidence and helps calm you down in game. unless you honestly dont give a damn you will always be nervous first tournament, and you will learn very quickly if you can handle it or not. like for example viking305 got 5th at his first ever tournament for injustice at WB. he had confidence after his 1st 2 wins and rode the confidence to top 5. if you can naturally deal with adversity is a big factor in all this. some people are good at fighting games almost naturally, while others can play for years and never get a good placing.
