What's new

Before I invest a huge deal of my time in this game.. Can someone answer this...

First of all, I have been a huge fan of MK since MK1, 2, and 3.. I have been following MK9 since the demo, and I have been stream monstering almost every major MK tourney there's been... I fell in love with the amount of HYPE MK 9 got at EVO and now I am very MUCH so considering joining this community and start traveling to tourns to get better.. etc.

My questions..:

I read a post earlier, in the Mileena forums, some guy posted (I think his name was Vulcan) this..

Bad design of characters. I keep repeating this since day 1: You can't make a character be great at offense AND great at defense. That's bound to create a too big imbalance.

"There's no way to fairly balance the game at this point without making the top 5 work too hard for damage and/or buffing like 2/3 of the cast.

Characters like Kung Lao, Raiden, Reptile and Kabal are great at everything (rushdown, zoning, mixup, counter and footsies). While characters like Sindel, Shang Tsung, Stryker, Sonya, Johnny Cage, Baraka and Jax are only great at one thing: zoning or rushdown. That's the problem.

We can only hope NRS learns from their mistakes."

What is everyone's opinion on this? Is the game inheritantly flawed to favor those 5 characters... It makes sense, yet a Mileena and Kitana player both made top 5.. How much over powered are those characters and could they ever be fixed so that there will be more of a variety in the end game?

I know in every fighter there is always the ... top tiers, then the rest.. I would just like to see more of "the rest" maybe one day be able to be viable.. Opinions?

Also, what is the best way to train.. I live in Central NJ and I only know one other person who plays the game in real life.. I can pull off decent combos in training but when I get online.. I get all flustered and don't know when to use them... Is it better to just play against comps? or Try to find people in NJ and travel and play them? I need like a starting point... Training mode all day or online for match up experience?

Ok.. Sorry for the chaoticness that was this post.. I hope you guys can understand what I am trying to find out ... haha.

I think bringing balanace to most super characters wouldn't be that hard. These are my opinions, but...

1: Make Raiden's teleport truly stuffable.
2: Make elbow dash have longer recovery, not on block but in general.
3: Delete Kung Lao (lol) or make Spin vulnerable to lows, and not push back on block (I think the latter is already happening)
4: Make Kabal's projectiles stuffable and make them not come out from behind him. I dunno if most people noticed, but sawblades spawn behind Kabal before they go forward, so you can be hit by them even when you pre-emptively deep jump over Kabal. It's dumb as shit. Also reduce the hitbox on Nomad Dash so it can't do the same thing.

To be honest I actually disagree with Vulcan's post. The game's noteworthy balance is undeniable with the varied use and success of char selection throughout EVO. And nerfing chars In terms of "zoning/rushdown balance" outside of touching dmg. Simply add frames to moves that fir example give KL too much zoning capability.

The variety in MK9 is great in my opinion. Ive seen great players beat other great players time and again with characters that are not on that list of five. Kung Lao seems to be the best all around character in the game, but I truly dont think us MKers need to worry about balance issues. A lot of characters are fun to play and that´s what matters in the end. Some characters have to work harder than others, but if this wasnt so it would be a first among fighting games. Perfect balance is impossible, theres healthy balance which keeps enough characters competitive and fun; and there´s bad balance, that renders so many characters completely useless that the game becomes stale to play. I believe Mk9 falls under the first of these two.

I don't think Vulcan meant that too literally. I mean, in all honesty, MK is probably one of the most balanced fighters being played competitively out there now I feel. Even though Kung Lao has some BS attached to him, he isn't the God tier you'd normally see associated with a fighter(Hilde in SC4, Sagat in vSF4, Yun in SSF4AE, etc.). Every character in this game is viable. Hell, you had REO post about why Mileena is 8-2 against Lao, but he was giving Perfect Legend a run for his money in every single match.

This game has problems, no doubt, but it's definitely not within reach of NRS fixing or even at the level of unplayable.

There's always online if you want to "train." Take that with a grain, though. There's always the matchmaking part of TYM if you want to find out about your local scene.

the problem is when there are so many fighters with difference skills and attacks it is impossible to balance them.
but this imbalance question where there are at least 3 races will be a great problem in any competitive game.
and kung lao's spin should be nerfed!!!!!!!!!! for sure
