Honestly I'd bet Max losing a match to his own full-screen charge tendencies as much as I'd wager DarthArma getting hit by d.1xxblank at least 3 times in a set.

I know someone who would tell you that he placed top 8 at Evo twice doing sub optional combos. When you are a veteran in tournaments, you realize hitting a combo 10/10 times is better than hitting a combo that does slightly more only 8/10 times.

I'm not saying he can't improve, I am just saying that often times going to maximum damage is not worth it unless you hit it 100%
