Performance problem with Diablo 2

I'm having some technical issues with D2, my laptop is pretty good and can run a lot of stuff but for some reason when there are over 3-4 enemies on screen, especially when they use abilities or auras the game slows down a lot, goes from like 50 fps down to 5-10 if I had to make an educated guess, even on the high performance setting.

How do I fix this? I've tried giving D2 the highest priority in all running applications but it barely helps.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person out there who still plays Diablo II. I did not like D3 at all. Diablo II for lifeeee. I only play single player hardcore anymore - its the only way I've played for the last 5+ years. What chars are you playing right now, Qwark?

Currently have a pure holy fire paladin in A2 hell that I'm finishing up... definitely a really underpowered build that I've always wanted to finish the game with. I also currently have a pure summoning druid, a melee enchantress sorc using a Passion phase blade, and a necro using nothing but 2-handed scythes and bone armor/curses to survive.

What did you do to fix it ? Might of even been compatibility mode
It always is compatibility mode. I download killap's patch and it allowed me to alter some properties and play it windows xp compatibility mode.

I bought D2 like 2-3 months ago but never really liked it that much, D3 and path of exile made me realise I hate playing games for the grind but I liked playing through it and love the story.

ATM playing a necromancer with skeletons/golems and bone spear, I love the necro but he seems pretty underpowered, summons aren't all that great outside of golems and bone spear is good at low lvls and half decent for everything else but lvl 60+ it seems.

Ah, gotcha. I've been playing D2 since it came out haha. Still love the game more than anything. I've long since given up the magic finding and grinding. I just love the D2 game system. I play now to take wacky and underpowered builds through the full game and see if I can do it in hardcore, where if you die once, that's it.

Summon necros are strong. Max raise skeleton and skeleton mastery, get a small handful of points in Summon Resists, and use a Clay Golem... its the only useful one as the game goes on. Unless you're planning on doing JUST the bone spear/spirit spells, they wont do any significant damage as the game goes on. Corpse Explosion is an awesome skill with only a few points since it scales with the enemies and will always do tons of damage.

Your endgame/hell difficulty build should probably be max raise skeleton and max skeleton mastery, Clay Golem with some Golem Mastery, some Corpse Explosion and some Summon Resist. Skeleton mages are optional. The rest of your points should be in curses. Amp Damage and especially Decrepify are what makes your army do damage, so you want to be cursing all the time.

Your gear should be enough to get max resists and ideally you'll want +skills items to boost your skeleton stuff past level 20.
