Sajam
Nightwing In Retirement
After dominating WNF for a long period with Superman, Theo takes a step away from his believed boy scout to take the tournament with Aquaman. This week's WNF top 3 featured a significantly different set of characters than we are used to seeing, and the gameplay was more exciting than ever.
Interesting Notes For This Week:
This week's WNF featured no shortage of upsets. RDK's Godspeed was knocked into losers first round in a close set against Zodiac's Batman. This salt in this defeat was only worsened by the fact that Godspeed was taken out in losers by Zodiac's own brother Immortal Angel.
Wonder Chef was also taken down early by Nubcake's strong Batman play. Chef's Black Adam proved too weak for Bruce, and he was quickly sent to losers by very solid play. Chef was defeated in losers once again by Batman, taking a loss against Zodiac's Batman as Green Lantern.
The Surprises:
WNF wouldn't be complete without a ridiculous amount of surprises. FR Legend decided he would play Superman this week, but his dream killing days were quickly ended by Folux and his amazing Flash. Folux impressed everyone at WNF with his fantastic Flash play before, during, and after the tournament. He will definitely be a player to watch for if he attends more often.
RDK's Tyrant suffered two defeats, one to Steeeeeve's Nightwing, and another to Immortal Angel's Scorpion. Tyrant was unfortunately having tons of controller issues that prevented him from moving or hitting buttons in both games, and was sent home earlier than expected.
The Bracket of Death:
Tyrant may have been cursed by the bracket Gods last week, but this weeks target was clearly Sonicboom Brad. He played not 1, or 2, but 3 Batman players as a Doomsday main. Not only did he beat all three of them, but Brad lost a ridiculously close 2-1 to Theo in winners semis.
After this defeat Brad had to deal with 2 of his demons in a row, Zodiac and Immortal Angel. This brothers have each played Brad at least 4 times each, and he has never been able to defeat either of them. Brad stepped up big this week, and beat both brothers in a row to earn his spot in losers top 3.
New Faces in Top 3:
This week's top 3 featured two character who have never been seen in a WNF top 3, Doomsday, and Nightwing. Top 3 started with a very interesting matchup, Theo's Aquaman against Steve's Nightwing. The two had played casuals a week or so prior, and Steve had taken a very decisive victory over Theo, however Theo proved that he did some studying as the matches went on. After being opened up consistently by flip kicks and baiting Theo's wakeups, the Aquaman player caught on quickly to Steve's shenanigans. His great use of backdash and forward dash to deal with NW's pound showed a great example of how all Aquaman players should be playing the matchup. His great adaptation from the weeks prior lead him to a 2-1 victory over Steve's Dick.
Losers finals had a match between training partners, Sonicboom Brad's Doomsday and Steve's Nightwing. After being absolutely destroyed for the majority of the first game, Steve started off badly again in the second. He began to use staff stand 1 and ground pound to play footsies with Doomsday, and prevent him from gaining the space he needed for the long start up on his special moves. This along with his composure almost slipping when the stage changed to rooftop allowed Steve to close out the set in a very close 2-1.
Grand finals featured a run back with Dick Grayson and the King of Atlantis. Steve attempted to switch up his style to throw Theo off, but his patient play proved to reign supreme. His reads on Steve only seemed to improve as the final game started with a great b12 to counter poke NW's b2. Theo used this lead to snowball the match and play safely. His ability to walk backwards and remain comfortable was extremely impressive, and lead to a 2-0 finish over Steve's Dick.
After defeating Steve and shaking his hand, Theo launched his hand out to the sky and yelled, "HOLD THAT BRADY!" Even though this statement was said in a joking matter, it will be interesting to see the results of WNF, and how well the SoCal players end up doing in a few months at NEC. It's been a while since the Southern California players have traveled, and everybody on both sides seem to be looking forward to it.
Congrats to Theo for winning another WNF!
