The basic 360 gamepad is not as bad as many people think, you just have to learn to use the d-pad for some inputs and the analog stick for others and learn to alter those. Not a DualShock for that's for sure but not bad. If you play 100% on the d-pad get a fightpad. I've never had one of those, but I hear they are good. In my opinion you should buy a stick. I just bought one recently and I'm not as good as with my 360 controller yet, but it's so much more fun :) .

Bullshit. The basic 360 pad IS as bad as people think. It's a terribly unresponsive piece of poo you have to fight with just to do fireballs.

My experience with alternatives:

MadCatz SF4 fightpad for 360 - great floating dpad, very responsive, 6 face buttons make for convenient plinking, but this pad is made from super cheap materials and WILL break down very quickly. The right side of my dpad ended up going first, while my friend has had problems with the start button dying and the dpad becoming less responsive. Great pad while it lasts, but it won't last for very long.

Hori EX 2 for 360 - makes the MadCatz pad look like a pile of shit, it's that good. Extremely responsive to the point that it feels like cheating in comparison to the default 360 pad. Also has 6 face buttons and includes shoulder buttons, triggers and analog sticks. The problem is it had some ghosting issues. If you read the Amazon reviews, quite a few of them will mention the controller moving on its own. This is happening to me too - every once in a while it will register a left press for a split second. For me this happens rarely enough that it doesn't interfere with my gameplay but there's no telling whether others would be worse, so while the dpad is absolutely friggin' amazing, it's hard to recommend this pad in good conscience. I would still get it over the MadCatz pad if you have a 30 day return to verify whether or not you're getting the ghosting problem.

I see no reason at all to use a stick for MK9. Outside of Kano there are no half circles, 360s or 720s, so the movement isn't complicated enough to warrant the precision of a stick. MK9 is perfect for pad and there's no reason to switch to stick if it's not your native input device.

The rotating d-pad will break on you. The middle wears down and the dpad pops off. Happened to me, my bro, and many reviewers online. What sucks about that is it is pretty good until it breaks. yay flushing $60 down the toilet.

I have a 20 dollar madcatz 360 controller with the + dpad, its ok, better than the stock 360, but inaccuracy started to piss me off.

360 pad players pretty much have one option, get a converter and a ps controller.
I haven't done that yet because I saw the videos for hitbox and built one myself to try out the accuracy/quickness. Still undecided if I'll stick with hitbox or get a converter for a ps pad.

Sorry but I love the 360 dpad. I did terrible with a PS3 controller at my last tourney and I'll be ready with a 360 converter this time.

No it's not that bad. Why? Because the quarter circle and bf specials can be done with the analog stick easily and double forward-backward can be done even with it's d-pad. It is usable and reliable you just have to get used to it. But yeah, there are a few on what the d-pad worth nothing. I have 3 and on 1 the d-pad just doesn't work, but the other 2 are great. :)

The reason why I changed to stick is because I want to start playing other fighting games and I just need a it for those.

In other words...the d-pad is ass and I'm sugarcoating it...?

I had too much trouble with the d-pad. Trying to throw fireballs quickly was difficult, but it was easier to block with. I bought an MK fight stick about a month ago and it's killer. You can do db and df moves so quickly when you find the sweet spot on the stick. I've had a tough time ith my blocking since getting it, just used to the trigger I suppose.

No guys. Don't you get it. Don't you SEE!?

The D PAD isn't bad on the 360. It's only bad if you plan on using it ALL THE TIME. But if you plan on throwing in a Joystick and using it like 50 percent of the time and the D pad 50 percent of the time while COMBINING the two the D-Pad On the 360 is AWESOME.

YOU JUST GOT TO GET USED TO SWITCHING CONSTANTLY BETWEEN THE TWO.

Goodwork Jelan for setting these guys straight.

Tim Static told me about the Horipad EX2 Turbo in a thread a few months back and I took a chance despite some shady reviews and ordered one. I've been using it ever since. AND a lot of my friends have bought one as well after they saw me use it. That thing is the tits.

However... the ghosting is very real, we all have problems with it. But the controller is awesome enough that if the ghosting ever becomes a serious issue (it's really not TOO bad yet after 2 months or so) it's totally worth just buying another one. I'm so confident when I use that pad.

It's the ONLY pad i'll recommend. Don't get the xbox turning d-pad. Don't get the razr onza TE. Get the Hori.

Worst Sub-Zero Ever
Converter and ps pad. That's what I am going to get.

The 360 pad is shockingly bad... even the new one; I cannot use d3 in a match with Sub-Zero because his ice puddle comes out half the time. That is how disgustingly, revoltingly, grossly inadequate the 360 pad is. I honestly slap my controller every time Sub does an ice puddle rather than a d3. I mean, how hard is it?! I can't even kick the guy in his shins. Unacceptable. I have to use d4 > ice clone as my only low poke option for now. Thanks very much, 360 pad.

Seriously, how bad is that?

Seriously, I RARELY had problems like that. :coffee:

Well, I do, and it's because even the slightest pressure to the left or the right when you do a d3 with Sub-Zero will have either an ice puddle or an iceball come out, and that is soooo unsafe up close, lol. When you're in a match situation, and you're reacting to something your opponent's doing by trying to mash out the d3 quickly, that's when the problem arises.

I've got one of those SFIV fightpads. You can pick em up at Gamestop for $30 or $40 bucks. It's seriously the best 3rd party controller I've ever bought. It's got a floating D-Pad for ultra-precise directional input and it kinda looks like one of those 6-button Sega Genesis controllers. If you decide to go that rout, however, make sure to get the Madcatz controller. PDP came out with one for MVC3 and it totally blows. I'm on the waitlist now for a Hitbox, but until that arrives I have no problem using my fightpad.

Yea, I have the PDP one for MVC3. It truly is awful.

I did like it while I was using it, but I'm currently now playing MK on PS3 with the PS3 pad (which is now my new favorite love). However, I can hardly find anyone to play online in ranked matches on PSN, so I would like to go back to ranking on Xbox Live.

Someone on here mentioned a possible PS3 controller to Xbox 360 converter....anyone know where I can find that? EBay seems to not have them (or I'm just blind as a bat).

Edit: Never mind. I think that I've found what I was looking for.

I've been using the regular controller recently. just use the analog stick. Decent until you get a pad.
Speaking of which, I have a problem. My PDP fightpad for the 360 kind of broke. it started when I couldn't hear the clicking noises(on the controller) when I moved it to the right. then the up movement stopped clicking. It went from that to everytime I move up, it goes right so I couldn't neutral jump. Now im only moving right. :(
Any suggestions please?

For me it's worth it but I've heard some bad stories with it, so far so good with me. It's better then the standard pad....but I've heard those Xbox M$ Hori pads are good stuff.

Here to confirm what others have said:

The rotating D-Pad is a very nice upgrade from the normal D-Pad, however, it will break with heavy use. I went through 2 in about 6 months before swtiching back to the normal controller. It's a shame because it works well until the inevitable happens.
