New Killer Instinct Pricing Schemes & Initial Roster Size (UPDATED!)

pffff... to all those guys who believe the KI developers "choose" quality over quantity:

bad gameplay + huge rooster = low reputation = low sales
decent gameplay + small rooster = decent reputation + extra money for char. sales

Besides, in reallity the could just put more developers on it and work overtime to finish the game in time (i'm talking about a 2013 rooster size + skinpacks + stuff), just like every company does when time is short. But then the financial loss would be much higher in case the game is ass. Its simply an economic decision.
If you guys buy that stuff, don't ever expect games to be finished when launched in the future.

Don't get me wrong, I love KI and expect this game to be good, but this issue is all about money.

MK_Al, the issue is Microsoft isn't a dev house and Double Helix is a tiny dev house. The fact that people are expecting a Capcom (thousands of staff) or even an NRS (hundreds of staff) level production on less than a year of development is laughable. KI looks dynamite and you can tell DH are into it, but there's only so much they can do. And if think Microsoft is going to shuffle Halo or MS Office staff over for a $20 launch fighting game, you're out of your mind.

What Microsoft should've done is accepted that it wouldn't be ready in the fall, given DH the time to make the game they want to make, and launch it in 2014 and have it be really stellar. Instead, they've put out something thats going to sell on name recognition and price point alone, which is a shitty way to build a brand. They should know by now gamers can smell a game that's built on pricepoint, and not on love. But it's xmas and they gotta move units, so fuck the long run, KI can burn.

Well, DH might be a small house, and I won't judge on their dedication to this game. And I agree that a year of development is really tight. But they obviously signed a contract with defined parameters, so they agree on launching and price politics.
That beeing said, a 20 char. rooster (assumed there will be that many chars) will cost you 20$ (8 char.) + 12 x 5$ = 80$ as far as I understand it. That seems quite a ripp off, compaired to about 40$ I usually pay for my games.

So when you go to work, is it for the love and benefit of your company? Or do you go because you need money to sustain whatever it is you do?

The reason the adults on this forum arent talking about microsoft and money is because we all understand the nature of business. Its these silly children who think business is trading play-doh for legos that are talking that garbage.

The developers actually do have a passion (or else they wouldnt be able to get a job with a useless degree), but the business aspect is not quite up to them. The game will sell well, the console will sell amazingly, and all these idiots who think Microsoft is out for money will have their dicks in their low income hands.

I'm not attacking you, im just making an observation about this community.

$20 dollars for 8 characters, 6 chars on release.
$40 Ultra edition, costumes, colars, et
Season pass 2...

In an ideal world, each year we'll see a new season with new content that fits into one game.

Conclusion:expensive game that has no end, content that takes months to be produced making the game even more expensive.
I know right?! They should have just charged us $60 for it + DLC and then in another year charge us another $60 for double the cast and nobody would be bitching about it!

Conclusion:

Injustice $60 DLC ~$60, injustice costs $120. Yet you're bitching about a FREE game you could play purely with one character or pay $20 the full game and later pay for DLC...

I can't believe people are defending this pricing method...

Calling it F2P is so not true. It's basically P2P with an extended demo with 1 character unlocked. For it to truly be F2P there would need to be some method of unlocking characters you would like to play outside of playing (for example LoL's pricing method).

Second, 6 characters is very small for release. Even smaller than Skullgirls at release, which got a lot of flak for the small roster, but made up for it by allowing team mode + choose your own assist moves of any move for increased team creation capabilities. But they STILL got a lot of flak for the small roster. And it was only $15 at release and additional chars do not cost money. Hell, even P4A got a lot of flak for the smaller roster, and it was much larger than this.

Third, I'm not sure why people think this is going to lead up to quality over quantity. Aside from some pretty particle effects and obviously higher graphic capabilities of a new console, there's not very much to indicate that. New fighting game developers in an extremely competitive genre these days, questionable balance with ridiculous amounts of 70%+ combos already discovered, questionable combo system, expensive pricing... Not to mention only 6 characters are going to be done at release with some still have not even been displayed yet, only indicating that development is very tight right now. There's more to indicate that quality is likely to be lacking than quality over quantity...

Fourth... has anyone even stopped to think that basically every character past 8 is going to be the price of a DLC character? People even complain about that when big games such as MvC/SFxT/MK/IGAU do that pricing after a large initial roster, yet these guys are doing it from the beginning??? Think about how much you will be spending by the time the roster reaches 20-30 characters?

Worst pricing method I've seen for a fighting game yet, a complete misnomer to call it free to play when only 1 character is free. Even SFxT with their well documented money-grubbing was more cost effective than this game..... How in the world are people so excited and defending this?

I agree with Spyridon
Go, buy a Xbox One and buy a complete KI... don't forget to order for the game to be complete soon..I'm talking about this too, expensive game and takes many months to complete, be patient. Injustice have 24 chars and modes, etc, the roster will be completed soon since april, poor compared, pay for 6 or 8. imcomplete game, wait and pay for more 8, in the next year pay for more, oh God.

tbh I like games with smaller rosters. To me it only means less matchups to learn lol. And it makes it easier to balance.

Can't really complain about this. After all, if MK9 had the KI pricing model I would only have paid 10$ total for it. If Injustice had the KI pricing model I would only have paid 20$ for it. Obviously no I would have still paid 40$ just to support the game and NRS. But it's still nice for casuals to have that option and get a fighting game for free or 5-10$.

I'm only disappointed that they were too lazy to design a boss character. Shadow Jago for final boss is going to suck.

Remember those idiots I was referencing before?

Play Monster Hunter!
I have absolutely no problem with the pricing structure, I thinks its fair for what you get.

However, 6 characters at launch really sucks IMO.

Their DLC schedule also makes me worry, it's probably coming out in November, and we won't be getting the 2 officially announced DLC characters until around april-march of the next year, and the second season of DLC will launch around "holiday 2014".
That is a long time to play with just 6 characters, and longer to play with just the 8.

But my biggest worry is that this is Microsoft we are talking about, there is a huge gap between the launch and the DLC, what if the game bombs and MS just says fuck it and decides it's not worth the money to continue? Same thing happened to Playstation Allstars, Sony decided to cut ties with Superbot and we never got some of the planned DLC they were working on, that douchebag from Legend of Dragoon, and Abe.

Honestly, I'm sure 8 characters is enough for some people, but personally I like medium sized rosters, I think NRS gets it right for aiming for around 30.

This is a fair and well thought out anaylsis by which I cannot fault your opinion. I personally dont think the game will bomb. Hell, MK had shit games that sold well; this will do fine.

read before you talk. . . do the math first, please! You must master the art of plus sign.

Guys take note; I've identified yet another idiot!

Here, this should help:

Clicky

Haha I was just trolling... I know how to read and was just making fun of idiots from here and eventhubs.

I know every single detail about this game day 1 buy. Die hard fan here.

Also I love how people bitched about KI3 chars looking too different from their original designs and now that get getting "classic fuking costumes" they find new things to bitch about and don't even acknowledge that we are actually getting what we asked for.
