During not only a successful tournament we've all come to know as the Video X Games that took place in the Caribbean, it is also a blissful vacation spot for tournament players. Last weekend the Video X Games 2013 took place and with it were many of our most well-known tournament players competing including Chicago, Illinois "Galloping Ghost Arcade" (GGA's) finest including GGA Dizzy, GGA 16 Bit and GGA Wafflez, EMP|CD Jr, FNATIC|Perfect Legend and the list goes on.

Being almost a week later; when the Video X Games were asked via twitter what the potential line-up for 2014 would be, the NetherRealm Studios community would be very pleased...

How was VxG a failure? The only negatives I heard was having to cancel Smash and the MvC2 tournaments.
all the details are on eventhubs

hell, they actually made FG players play cod and some bitch got so mad for losing that he kicked mike ross's bag and broke his stick

If you're talking about that list, I heard most of what was listed was false.

To be serious here. It doesn't even matter if all of the bad things that supposedly happened are rumors. For the kind of event it was meant to be, the turnout wasn't close to good. That's a ton of government money wasted. Even if it was fun, it's a failure.

What was the turnout? I haven't even seen any numbers.

I don't know exact numbers, but I believe Injustice had something like 35? We had more entrants at our local on Saturday. And I don't think anything else went much higher than that.

Damn, didn't know the numbers were so low. It's understandable considering the ridiculous prices to get out there, but in the 30-40's is pretty low for the prize money they were dishing out.

It's not just prize money. Getting the event together, paying for a good bunch of the American players to come out, plus all the promotional stuff. I was hearing a budget of something like 80k on the government's dime for this. Whether or not Rolando is a good guy and worked hard on this event, they're going to realize they let him waste a ton of money.

I guess its time that i address this officially for people who want to use words like "Failure/waste of money" in association with VxG, and dont have any facts together. While most of those who were throwing around baseless rumors about VxG have come and apologize after talking to the players who were here, i guess Mr. Revolver and maybe some other might want to check their facts.

First of all, VxG was never intended to be a huge number tournament. Sorry, but having 200+ entrants in each game is not what interests us. What interests us is the total number of people that come to the tournament. Total number of international people who travelled to the island and stayed at Sonesta Maho for our tournament was 378 people. That is just under triple the number that came last year (128). These were spread across many games, including fighting games, but let's not forget several people who came just for the vacation aspect and parties of VxG. We have met the target of the hotel, the government and the people of St. Maarten who got extra work and benefits in this slow season on our island because of this event. I think the 8000+ people who came out to our Sunday Celebration with the gamers on the beach is a testament to the appreciation our island people have for the gamers who came here.

Also, if you understand the nature of tourism advertising, it is about building awareness about a destination. How many members are there on TYM? say 10k? Well guess what, while most of those TYM members NEVER heard of St. Maarten before, now every single one of you knows about it being a tourism destination. Sure, not all of you may travel here, or even like the destination, but if even 1% of you travel to our island over the next 5-10 years for one trip, the money invested was already a success.

VxG was by no means perfect. Keep in mind that a lot of the issues we had was some let downs from people we hired in your own FGC. We'll make adjustments on the partnerships and people we hire in 2014 to ensure that we do even better. We know we some things to improve on for next year, but this is just our second year as an international tournament, our first in which we attracted a large number of people.

The fact is: almost every single person of the close to 400 people that came here had the times of their life and cant wait to come back. Ask any of the mk or injustice players or other of their overall experience here for yourself if you have doubts. Stream monster experience was not as great, and while this is secondary, or actually even tertiary to who we want to impress, we still knows its important to put on a good show for the audience online and will improve that a lot next year.

Finally let me say, that the overall lack of support we got from people in this community during the weekend was really sad. To see certain individuals lick their chops at the opportunity to take a swipe at VxG's shortcomings is something most sponsors would back away from and cease to support your scene. Luckily, i am a strong willed person and have given the thumbs up to our government to go ahead for next year. I could just resign based on the few trolls who tried, like revolver, who try to crap on the event, and just do a league of legends tournament, but i want to give the FGC a chance at big prizes and an awesome vacation every year. But if trolls continue to polute and attack sponsors at will, the scene is not going to grow. People have to be careful of the level of trolling. Some of you going as far as to try to send the thread insuperable made to our local newspaper is proof that some people are maliscious in intent. But most have apologized for these actions and i hope now that the dust has settled people can give us a chance to show them why VxG is an important part of the FGC from now and many years to come.

If you want to make this a thread of its own TYM go ahead.

The FG players chose to play COD themselves. We were quite pleased to hear them play that in tournament and do well. whats wrong with Yipes and Persia, two players who are avid COD players, having fun in the COD tournament?

Honestly any tournament will have its issues. Learning to build a big event is hard and takes trial and error. A lot of times it takes years. Lets look at gripes from tournaments of the last year we've all come to know and love:

NEC: had some bracket issues
UFGT: A lot of stream timeslot/fairness issues, caused a big ruckus
CEO: Issues with some systems not having the current hotfix, almost all the way through pools
EVO: Issues with switching tournament rules in the middle of a game bracket

And some of these tournaments have been around for years and years. They were all still fun experiences despite any screwups.

How do you think most of the TOs you respect, like Jebailey, 9.95, etc. learned to run a good tournament? Through trial and error. Getting out there, having stuff go wrong, making mistakes, and learning from them for the next event they did. It's growing pains, and it's an important part of the process.

The difference was that a lot of these guys started small, wheras VxG has been in the spotlight and scrutinized the entire time, since it aimed to be really big and well publicized from the get go. So VxG has had to grow up in the spotlight, faster than anyone else.

To Rolando the_vxg: understand that the reason VxG was criticized so harshly is that people haven't built trust for the event yet. Believe me, people snapped just as critically after things that occurred at UFGT and CEO (with some players threatening not to come back in the case of UFGT), but the community has gotten to know those tournaments and organizers over some years, so there's a basic level of trust and familiarity to go underneath the scrutiny and the usual trolling.

Also, some things I did watch people like Jebailey warn you about (he tweeted to you that reseeding tournament brackets for Top 8 would be a problem, and indeed it turned into a snafu in Injustice).. So there's always going to be an element of "I was waiting for this to happen and I told you so" mixed in.

But the best thing in this case is that you (Rolando) have shown a willingness to actually listen to and accept criticism. As a TO of a major event, that is rare -- and people like that are the kinds of people communities absolutely need to grow.

My hope is that people will take this year's issues with a grain of salt and learn to see all the good, the hype and the fun that happened. This is an event that, if people work with it and don't burn the bridges, can easily become one of the most fun and unique events the FGC has to offer. I wholeheartly offer Rolando my support, and I sincerely hope that everyone will give VxG another look, be patient, and help it become everything it can be.
