What's new

Real talk, I suck at this game.

That Yung Big Body
The only character I can play somewhat competently is Green Lantern. He's a zoner, he's straight forward, and his combos are short but give out 30%+ damage and require no actual timing whatsoever (dial-a-combo for everything).

I want to get better but I feel now that I have the basics of a zoning character down I should try my hand at a rushdown character who is good at beating zoners.

Well, lately I've been trying my hand at Batgirl because people on this forum said she was easy to pickup with lots of tools and easy combos. Fair enough, she sure does have a lot of tools and the combos look simple on paper for someone who has been playing fighting games a while and can easily adapt to timing button presses on combos.

However, I do not find her easy to pick up. I still am not sure on the concept of a "vortex", probably because I cannot execute ANY of her recommended combos because none of them are fully "dial-a-combo" and require timing, which I don't have.

Ok, so should I still keep ramming my head against the wall, suck it up, and keep trying to get better with her? Or should I utilize my time more effectively and pick up someone else?

Out of these characters which have the most easily executed combos (online) which mostly do not require timing and are primarily rushdown characters?

Batman
Batgirl
Catwoman
Harley
Joker
Nightwing (kinda hesitant on this one, hear he's basically like learning 2 different characters what with his stance changes)
First I would say delve back into GL, he is not a zoner. He CAN zone effectively in certain match ups, but you must remember this is not street fighter and projectiles do not trade so the faster, multi hitting, more damaging projectiles will always do you in if you play that battle. GL has a great vortex of off his meter burned LM grab and thats really the key to his play(after meter burning the LM grab you can dash to the other side of the opponent and come in with a low starter b13 or the f3 over head, both of these allowing you to combo back into the LM grab. By crossing over to the other side of the opponent you lose the opportunity for free damage by continuing the combo, but you gain the chance to catch them in a new combo that they have to block. Since its a new combo the damage is also reset which can lead to massive life loss if you have the meter to continue teh vortex and they keep guessing wrong).

Second I would say give all those characters a try and see which one feels the best to you, then proceed to ram your head against the wall, suck it up, and stay in practice mode until you can do their combos 10/10 times. You are already a member of the site so all the resources are right here. Some characters are easier than others, but to be skilled with any character takes serious work(literally everyone has dirt man). If you dont want to be a scrub you gotta grind it out until you arent one, and switching characters when one gets a little difficult will not help that(in your defense batgirl links are not AT ALL ez to do. You will have to just build up muscle memory with her if you chose to use her).

Also the quickest and easiest way for me to find out where something links or if it will link is to do the string/combo then hold directly up or directly down. The moment your character jumps up or crouches is the moment you can input another command.

Doomsday is the most newb-friendly character in the game.

I'd say pick who you like and take the time to learn your timings. You'll be a much better player all around for it.

I am really average at this game and there are some days where I feel like I really suck. It feels like a game of momentum sometimes where you feel like you can't lose, but then there are those times where you just can't buy a game.

As for which character to choose. I picked up Deathstroke as a third character and really enjoy playing him. I know people are annoyed by his guns and zoning but he has some really good tools fighting close and has a somewhat easy Vortex. Just don't get trigger happy or sword flip happy and you'll see controlling him isn't too difficult.

Doomsday. Go in traing mode for a good 30 mins with him whether you figure him out in that time or not you'll realize there isn't much execution involved to be effective. Plus has an unblockable move to blow up zoners, armor to go through projectiles, and is a rush down character.
Know he isn't on your list but I just recommend tryin him out

I really dont think there are any complex characters in this game at least in the sense none are hard to be good with execution-wise.

Props to NRS for probably the best control scheme of any fighting game.

Negative edge in this game is massive. It will never misread so long as you are aware it is there and adjust your timing accordingly.

Input buffer is great, allowing very easy followups to jump-ins.

Wake-ups are now very easy to do as well.

When people say a character is difficult, they are only refferring to the way they feel a character should be played. If you have difficulty with a character, you can still be quite effective if you switch to any easier strategy that makes better use of scaled-down combos.

this game is beyond easy. green lantern is one of the easiest "charcater with longs combos and good damage" characters ive ever played with in a fighting game and i can confirm his bnb's with my eyes closed based on the sound of b13 hitting

small children could learn how to be really good with doomsday.

and yes, everyone sucks and all anyone does is mash Kappa

Superman is very good to learn the basics i'd pick him.Between the ones you mentioned i'd say Batgirl because she's a straightforward character. In my humble opinion Nightwing Batman and Harley have all easy combos but are hard to play properly.

batgirl is a lotttt harder to play effectively than a charcater like superman or green lantern.

imo the hardest (still easy) charcaters to play OPTIMALLY with

Combo/juggle timing can be learned; it just takes practice. But you need at least a bit of it for most of the better combos in the game. Take it slowly, one step at a time, until you get used to anticipating how the gravity works.

I'm shocked that nearly every poster in this thread hasn't written the word "Doomsday" somewhere in his or her response.

If my reading comprehension is even somewhat adequate, you are looking for a primarily rushdown oriented character that will afford you relative ease of execution, and all the while, allow you to be moderately competitive? Seriously, that almost defines Doomsday in a nutshell, IMO. I know he isn't on your list, but pick up Doomsday. As a bonus, his "Blackest Night" Skin is delightfully awesome.

What're you comparing against?

I agree many characters are easy execution wise, but there are some characters with just-frame combos and generally tricky combos due to 3D hitboxes being wonky. Catwoman comes to mind.

I keep playing as catwoman but im struggling. I understand what op feels like and think i should have picked an easier character! Got MMH today so im gonna put some time in with him now.
