What am I doing wrong?

It seems that regardless of how much time I spend in training mode or online, I still suck. Why can't I learn fgs? I'm not new to FGs. I've been playing for over a decade, albeit I've never had anyone serious to play against. But what am I doing wrong?

Are you on PSN or XBL. You have to spend time outside of training, try going against the AI for a while and practice defense and punishing. poking is another good trick to practice.

If you're on PSN I can help you out, see what you're doing wrong and give you some advice.

You're playing on a bad, possibly wireless connection?

You're expecting help on TYM? (jokes.. mostly.)

You're post doesn't give anyone enough information to even hypothesize what your problems are.
You've been playing FGs for over a decade, but still suck at them? Shit, man. Devotion, I guess.
What character(s) do you play?
Who do you find yourself losing against?
Any tactics in particular?

Do you have any friends on this site? If not, play against them online, assuming you're on a tolerable or good connection, and aren't too geographically distanced from them.

There's a "fighting game philosophy" category somewhere on this site you could read.
(PS, I play on a wireless connection and don't have problems online.)

Well, I can't narrow down exactly what my specific weaknesses are. I've pretty much never known anyone else whose serious enough about FGs to play and practice with.
I've played a lot of characters. In injustice, I've tried Black Adam, Batman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and Superman online mostly. I seem to lack fundamentals, and keep losing to various tactics. Some specifics include not knowing how play against Grundy or GL, and I never wager. In SF4 I've played M. Bison a lot.

Well if you can't specifically point out what you're struggling with, maybe if you play some good players to give you feedback and help you grow.

If you play on PSN, I'd be willing to help and several others have offered too, and I'm sure people on Xbox would be keen too.

You have to tell us who your using what exactly you cant grasp and who you find yourself losing against. I mean the training mode in this game is great for new players you can put yourself in a situation and learn away to get out of it. Add me on psn if your on it and we can talk.

Try getting in sessions with players from here, and after the set, ask them for advice and what to work on. This site is probably the best way to get better at the game, it got me a hell of a lot better at both MK9/Injustice.

It's hard to give advice when you don't get specific. It's like "Why can't I paint my house?!?"

Well, I don't know. Do you mean you don't have enough money to buy paint? Or is the paint you're using bad? Do you mean that the house just looks ugly when you're done? Is it raining so you can't paint at all? Are you having trouble standing on the ladder? Is your ladder shitty? Do kids keep throwing rocks at you while you're trying to paint? Are you allergic to paint? Does painting give you a pain in your wrist and you need to go to a doctor? Do you keep passing out from paint fumes? Will your significant other simply not give you permission to paint the house? Is your house on fire? Do you even have a house?

Help us out here.

(DO YOU EVEN HOUSE?)

Well, I can't narrow down exactly what my specific weaknesses are.
1. Which single character do you play as the most?
2. Which characters are you having troubles against?
3. How easy/hard is it for you to start a combo?
4. When you complete a combo, what is the typical damage you inflicted?
5. Are you able to complete your combos without dropping them?
6. How often does your opponent start a combo on you prior to you being able to combo them?
7. Do you find yourself getting hit even when you are blocking?
8. Are you able to get around aggressive zoning?

If you can answer these questions, people will be able to give you some more detailed advice. :)

How can you level up when it's practically impossible?

Play a high tier character...Black Adam, Superman, Doomsday(cheap online) or even Batman cuz his combos are easy and pretty good damage.

If you lack fundamentals, than work on those. Build from the ground up. Doing a million hit fancy combo's aren't going to help if you can never land anything.

When I help people get into SF, I like to do matches with them, and force them to just use footsies and pokes, no jumping, no specials moves. It helps them find the range of all of their buttons, not just Fierce and Roundhouse. Jumping is usually suicide, try to do it as minimal as possible. I know Injustice is more lenient with jumping, but you need to know when and how to do it.

Since you've played Bison in SF4, try out Doomsday. Nice corner pressure, big reaching normal attacks, decent mobility, and his execution is minimal. People believe he is a purely gimmick character, and that can be very true fighting scrubs, or the majority of people online, but against anyone good, using Doomsday forces you to have great fundamentals, spacing and reads, Using gimmicks will get you killed.

The answer to this is always the same; You're playing the wrong people.

Build a real friend list, or go play at a local.

For example, I suck but I'll play you. GT trufenix on XBL.
