MKT-psx: Playing handicap mode without Kombat Kodes?

Hi, I remember playing with a friend many years ago and we were able to set handicap at the character selection screen, without entering any Kombat Kodes. I don't remember how, and I can't find anything on the internet so it's impossible?

Possibly in the options menu, you hold L1, L2, R1, R2 and hold UP until the screen shakes. I think that has some handicaps in there. I cant remember for sure since I never try to use the code anymore...

There is no handicap option in the "secret menu".

The only other thing you can do at the character select is the level select cheat.
