Hey guys, we the scum of the earth offline elitists were talking about some of our shitty tournament experiences and how despite them being awful we would still make all those sacrifices and more for the community. I was wondering what are some of the terrible moments you went through to be able to compete and hang out with the offline community. I have a bunch of stories:
- Driving 16 hours in Zyphor's murder-car of death. So, coming back from Combo Breaker we got majorly screwed by the airline (Spirit, figures). They booked us on Monday when we were supposed to come back on Sunday. Rebooking it was more expensive than buying a new one, so I asked Zyphor if he could drive us (me, Reo and Pikachu) for paper money. God bless him but Jesus christ, we took his ex-gf car that had NO brakes, an effy cruise control and headlights that were as powerful as the light on my phone. So we drove in the middle of the night, 10 hrs Zyphor and the rest myself. Half-asleep, with no visibility and the worst brakes in history of cars. But we made it just fine and even recorded this gem:
- Driving 9 hours from TCW last year. So I figured 6 hours wasn't as bad coming back around 9pm. I could get 6 hrs to sleep and arrive to work late. Now, leaving VA into Delaware, there's a highway where the speed limit is 40 mph. Gandyman and myself had this wonderful idea of NOT driving through the coast line and avoid that highway. Big mistake. 5 hours in, we see this tiny little flickering light in the middle of the highway. I slow down when suddenly a dude shows up in the middle of nowhere. I lose control of the car for a little bit but manage to dodge him. Gandy screams at him that we can't see him, the dude replies "it's the only thing I got, there's a dead body here". So we turn to the left and there's this poor person, or parts of a person, spilled all over the highway. Almost as if he got run over, then several other cars went over him. Just as we were looking at him the patrol cars arrive from the other direction and make us go the other way. Siri takes us to some backwoods 1 lane street in the middle of nowhere, you know where people get killed and disappear in movies. In the end it took us 9 hours to get home. I was hallucinating while awake at some point, and the drivers at those hours are really, really bad. Poor Gandy had to take a train as soon as we arrived back to NY (extra 2 hours for him). I called work and told them I wasn't going to make it lol.
- Mexico's tournaments. 8 hour bus rides for 10 man tournament with 1 laggy CRT and Under The Mayo's monitor and one of the worst communities I've been to. Yeah, half of those guys were pretty unbearable but hanging out with UnderTheMayo was always the absolute best. I'd take those godawful bus trips all over again.
- Coming back from MLG Dallas 2012. I lived in Mexico back then. I scheduled the shuttle before hand to save some money. Problem is the shuttle company screwed up and picked me up super late, making me miss my flight. I had to re-buy one to Guadalajara, that's 2-3 hours away from my hometown. I ended up arriving around 2 am in this VERY shady bus station in the middle of Mexico with my laptop and my hitbox. The next bus left at 7am. I was awake for 5 hours clutching at my stuff scared to death. During the "pre-screening" (yeah like low tier TSA), a woman threw my hitbox and passed it through the xray machine, effectively breaking it. I couldn't get that hitbox fixed after that and had to buy a new one. Ggs. Still one of if not the best tournament I've ever been to.
- On a lesser extent, driving 6 hours to go to Virginia with Decay and Indecisive for a 15 man local in a game I really didn't like. Basically just because I got a ticket for speeding (see the 40 mph highway in the story above). Besides that, it was a long ass trip but I loved every second of it.
So yeah, what are some of your stories? I know some people think that we're super rich because we travel a lot, but really don't take into account the fact that we're usually rooming with 8 other dudes and sleeping in the floor or not eating the whole day. It'd be nice to put things in perspective a little bit.
