So how do powers work in MK from a physics point?
For example, Goro will have had to generate so much energy in his fist so he can create a physical mass of plasma from air gases and throw it, which would make his tissues, at least those of his arms, extremely heat resistant.
Sub-Zero would have to absorb all heat from around him to create cold or icy formations, which would make him extremely hot on the inside, but hiss skin with extreme low heat conduction so that the heat he absorbs doesn't actually come out.
Tremor would have to make a more powerful magnetic field through his arms than that of Earth's to move rock layers, which is attainable by electrical discharge, and would actually be like Raiden.
Mileena would have to warp space to be able to teleport from down through up, which makes her extremely powerful, as this can be achieved by speeding. She's Flash O_O

Erm lets not try and force a scientific explanation because baring in mind the physics aspect probably wasn't considered during character development. Saying that...

Well goro is part dragon is he not? Which means he will have scaly hardened skin which could be heat resistant. and he comes from outworld so there's much of outworld that is still a mystery.

As for sub-zero and tremor they are elemental's same with scorpion - water, fire, earth e.t.c.
I don't think a magnetic field will have any affect on trying to move rock. A gravitational ability will be more suited. So if he could warp the mass around his arms or direct the mass then he could potential move rocks and mountains.
But i think mostly with mk lore its power attained by special training meditation and enlightenment- that sort of thing ("mind bullets" that's telekinesis kyle). Look at kung lau and knight wolf for example its almost as if they are hinting at mind over matter scenario.
Alternatively it could be high tech - so some sort of high tech chip implanted in the brain allows them to manipulate matter and energy (essentially two states of the same thing but you get what im trying to say)
The one thing that will be exceedingly difficult to explain is shangstung sole stealing ability and perhaps ermac all the other worldy abilities.

In the MK world, earthrealm is the only realm where technology advances as fast, people ages as fast, and aside from people who has mixed blood, regulars like Sonya, Jax, Jacqui, Kano all use technology to use their powers.

Kung Lao, Liu Kang and Kung Jin channel Ki(chi) which is what MArtists in real life believes to be any close to magic, its an energy that can be exists around anything, can be channeled from within the body, or outside in the environment, it can be shaped into many forms presented by nature itself, like fire, water, wind, lightning or earth.

Johnny Cage, Raiden, Cassie and Sub-Zero are particular cases, Johnny is descendant of a tribe that can harvest a sort of power designed to defeat gods, Cassie being a direct daughter of Johnny C. it has been proven that she also has the same ability, other player that may be from this same tribe is Nightwolf.

Raiden is a God, he has natural inclination to lightning, the thunder obeys is will, and he can just modify every part of his body into a natural element, its practically as if lightning has shaped into a person.

Sub-Zero is not exactly a earthrealm character, since his father before him its from a outworld linneage


Every other character that is not originally from Earthrealm uses a sort of magic, dark magic, white magic or genetic ability whatsoever, they also don't age that fast compared to the others that is why their powers is more associated with teleports, telekinesis and whatever is that can't be explained through the laws of Chi manipulation.

Reptile's blood is natural acid, Devorah's blood is also natural acid, although Skarlet is a character that is a blood pool fused with magic, she can absorb blood and control it in any level including desmaterialization, intangibility and flow, she can't absorb tainted blood like Reptile's or Dvorah's which was recently proven to be a few of her real weakness. Those characters are either genetic ability, though skarlet wasn't naturally born she was manufactured with magic, Ermac as well, Reptile, Dvorah's are real race from other realms, such as Goro is a Half Monster Half Dragon


IMO Mortal Kombat is a universe is very rich in powers, races and so on, sadly not every single side of it is as much explored.

For example Demons aren't a thing that we see a lot in the MK universe, we have, wraiths, gods, humans, cyborgs, monsters, genetic entities, sorcerers, but demons aren't a side that NRS has decided to tap to explore just yet.

Kia, Jataaka and Sareena are 3 characters inside the category of pure demons, according to their descriptions, they can attain human form trough a form of magic which needs to be rejuvenated from time to time or when they start taking much damage, a thing NRS could easily exploit in the game play. Sadly this day is yet to come.

Tremor was explained in the comics that his ability is something having to do with science, i guess he experimented something into himself and that was the result.

Scorpion in the other hand is a wraith, he was consumed by the fires of nethrealm and an alternate personality that has control over hellfire was forged in it, so mixed with a few of his ninja abilities, he can disappear, travel through hell gates instantly, summon fire, enhance himself with it, or move people through his portals if he feels like it.

Remembering Noob Saibot another wraith have gained a sort of living clone that could move independently out of his body as both being the exact same person,, he also can move through portals and move people into it just as scorpion, one of the most incredible concept NRS developed further in MK9.

Wraiths are stronger in netherrealm also, its their natural habitat.

Not trying to explain the actual game, rather find explanations for fun. Well, there's different types of burns. Johnny's could very well be a ball of chemicals and cause chemical burns.

The point is to make the game feel more realistic and less like bullshit. it's the same reason that characters personalities and actions are supposed to be relatable; to build a sense of empathy from the player. Everytime I see a teleport in a fighting game I scream Bullshit!!!
