Does Mortal Kombat need fatalities?

VenomX-90

"On your Knees!"
The thread isn't pointless. Does the game need them? Yes, but only for marketing. The fatalities are there as a marketing gimmick. That's what they were in the beinning and that's what they are now. But, I would agree with Vulcan, and say that they've taken a wild turn from where they started and are now just sadistic.

The original fatalities in MK were completely in-line with the Kung Fu/Grindhouse feel of the old Kung Fu flicks that inspired Big Trouble. The deaths in those movies are comical and over the top, with bright red, cartoon blood spewing everywhere, which is what MK1,MK2, and MK3 had.

MK9 isn't trying to be comical. It's trying to depict torture and not just violence. The beautiful twist in the digitized MK games is that in spite of them using real actors to portray the characters, the designers also pitted them against obvious claymation figures, and had the blood and fatalities cartoony and related to the same type of violence you'd see in a Looney Tunes cartoon or in a movie, like a Kung fu movie, Temple of Doom, or Raiders. Many kids had already seen faces melt, limbs torn off, and hearts get ripped out. When Baraka was shown, Kids could instantly relate him to T-1000. The old games had pop cultural cues to the violence. The new games don't.

The new games are all about torture, and watching the other character suffer as they die. It's not enough to just kill them in today's games. The swiftness of the old fatalities also added to their humor. Who really wants to see Wile E. Coyote get blown up by one of his ACME devices and then languish on the ground with one leg and a torso, and then get shot in the face, decapitated, and then disembowled? That's Itchy and Scrtachy type violence, which is supposed to be totally sadistic because it's a satire of the old violent cartoons which had more straightforward violence, but were violent nonetheless. Yes, many people can laugh at the violence of the new games, but if you are sick, and enjoy violent torture I think the new games feed that as well, which wasn't really the intent of the old games. I'd say Scorpion's MK2 fatality and Baraka's MK2 fatality were the closest thing to torture in the old games, but they still had legs standing after death and buckets of bright red blood oozing to keep them silly.

Everytime I see your posts.

I no longer main characters on any fighting games.
But Fatalities are awesome and other than the story and characters both of which are also awesome is one of the many reasons why Mortal Kombat is so popular.

maybe even BETTER without them because then they'd put more time into gameplay, story, netcode, QA and various modes.
I think you're overestimating how much time fatalities take; compared to the other stuff you mentioned, its just an animated sequence, which in the grand scheme of things really aren't that hard.

Anyway, I think MK does need them, its one of the few things that set it apart from other fighters, and the over the top stuff is why its really the only fighter I play.

Without the Fatality system, your computer games would not have an age rating system. which is irresponsible. HALF OF ME WANTS THIS THREAD LOCKED BUT WE NEED TO EDUCATE NEW PEOPLE TO THE MK FRANCHISE
No, it wasn't just MK. Doom and Wolfenstein and some other games had people all stirred up; the ratings would have happened anyway.

I like Tekken 8
Riiight...co-creator and Director of NRS' opinion doesn't matter. Good call.
what sells is what matters not what he thinks. It's scorpion in the cover because he's a fan favorite or because he's ed's favorite. Was kreat-a-fatality taken out because ed or cause of the fans? If ed said no fatalities and the fans said yea whos opinion would overrule who's?

Ed Boon, because he is the creative director and so gets the final say on what goes in or out.

I was one of those people who couldn't play the original Wolfenstein because it gave me blackouts however I have a fond memory of playing Doom on pc with a virtual reality headset. You could look around corners. Off topic but kool.

Where art thou, MKX Skarlet?
So if he said no more fatalities we'd all just have to hold that?
Being a Director means his opinion holds quite a bit of weight. Is he a dictator? No, he would have to present quite the argument to take fatalities out. Does he overrule a LOT of people? Uhh, yeah. Including fans like me and you.

Does fan base desires play a role in the development of games? Sure...but you seem to think it dictates it, which is absolutely, certainly, repeatably-verified not the case - examples are abundant across all genres of products everywhere, not just video games.

Tailgates & Tan-lines !
You sir have lost all respect points for even suggesting this.
-Doesn't add to fighting gameplay: The Fatalities are mk, it's almost a reward for beating you opponent, it's what drives you to win, just to humiliate your opponent.
-Limits the amount of people I can show the game to (younger/easily scarred people). Can also turn off a lot of potential players *would also need turn xrays in regular supers for this to take into account: You obviously have never played any other multiplayer online game in the past 5 years, kids give ABSOLUTELY no fucks about gore they play everything, CoD, Battlefield, Assassins creed, i've come across a kid younger than 13 in all of these games. And who exactly is it turning off, who says in todays day and age that something has too much gore?
-Story mode in MK9 had minimal gore yet it still remained a fantastic MK experience: Did you not watch the first 5 minutes of the game with sonya blade's body ripped in half and being nibbled on by a vulture. apparently that qualifys as minimal gore
-Waste of time to watch fatalities online with strangers: That is why there is an option to do the fatality or not, you don't have to do it if you don't want to, this isn't injustice where the winning animations are actually boring to sit through, never once have I said damn didn't feel like seeing that fatality again, if I got my ass kicked I deserve to be fatalitied and humiliated. I've seen kung laos fatality in mk9 so many times its not even funny but I still enjoy watching it.

Thread gets 1 point for making me feel discouraged and another point for effort your score is a 2/10.

I'm sure there could be an MK, MK x SF or MK x KI with babalities, friendships and other kinds of censored/rated E finishers but zero gore and it would still sell pretty well and be a great fighting game. It just probably wouldn't sell as much... but you never know.

They could also replace gore with sex/fan service and it would sell around the same copies lol. It would just appeal to a different perverted audience..

What a day. What a lovely day.
Does DOA need ridiculously bouncy female characters?
Does Tekken need overly abundant hit-effects on every move?
Does Killer Instinct need a loud ass announcer shouting every 5 seconds?

The answer is no, but these are defining aspects of the series. Without them a piece of the puzzle would be missing, and some of the magic would be lost.

Gesture Required Ahead

Get on that hook
Where did I say playing MK will turn you into a killer lol. I've been playing these games since MK1 was released on SNES and I was skipping class when I was like 8-11 years old to go play MK2 and UMK3 at the arcades. I turned out ok I think rofl.

I get that violent video games and movies are all about catharsis. I just don't really get turned on by gratuitous gore violence. There was a point in my life where I loved this kind of stuff. But now I think it's more fun and entertaining when it's cheesy gore meant to be taken lightly and with humour. Not when it's realistic, dark/macabre and super serious.
It's an actual sexual fetish for them and they dream to be able to do it to someone one day... They're sick lol.
lol you edited this out of your post. Nice try.

Ed Boon answers to WB executives. It's the opinion of WB executives based upon facts of sales figures and MK's impact on cultural society.
