Does Mortal Kombat need fatalities?

Before I start, I'd like to say that I was introduced to MK through MK9 so my bias will be much different than a lot of other people here but I want to hear what you have to say.

I understand that fatalities are a Mortal Kombat signature and that without them people would be pissed. However, I present to you my reasons to why I think that fatalities are unneeded:
-Doesn't add to fighting gameplay
-Limits the amount of people I can show the game to (younger/easily scarred people). Can also turn off a lot of potential players *would also need turn xrays in regular supers for this to take into account
-Story mode in MK9 had minimal gore yet it still remained a fantastic MK experience
-Waste of time to watch fatalities online with strangers

On the contrary, here are some pros:
-Better publicity therefore increasing sales
-Fun to watch friends react
-Great for casuals for when you need to show your friend who's boss

Anyways feel free to give out your honest opinion

I only liked fatalities when they were hilarious and overtop like in UMK3. You also had babalities and friendships so they were just a fun way to rub it in your opponent's face.

Now they're becoming way too graphic and almost like porn so I find them pretty disgusting and pointless.

It's an actual sexual fetish for them and they dream to be able to do it to someone one day... They're sick lol.
It seems like you don't know why people play video games. You sound like dumb parents who think playing GTA will turn people into criminals.

Absolutely.

Do you know how many casuals wouldn't buy the game if there were no fatalities? I can hear them now - "this shit is gay now there r no fatalities im not buy this gay ass game now fuck it"

Fatalities are there to satisfy those types of people. I enjoy them for the first 3 or 4 times I see them, and after that I'd only do them to show someone else who hasn't seen it. What is absolutely necessary is some sort of Babality finisher to humiliate people.

lol this thread
if MK didn't have fatalities, i wouldn't know the franchise and probably be a full time SF player now.

The fact that they're over the top are the reason they are funny. If you took the original fatalities and put them in modern gen they would look just as gross, so I dont see your distinction lol.

That being said, after like 3-4 times they get old. BUT this thread is suuuupppeerr pointless since we have already seen fatalities and they are obviously going to be in the game.

The OP just wants to hear your opinion on whether or not they are needed to make the game good/sell.

It's staple like the block button so it's always gonna be there. You don't have to do them and as others have said there is a no blood code. Also most people only buy the game to see and perform fatalities on their friends. Trust me when MK9 came out that was the only reason I bought it, but I never played fighters seriously til DOA5 and Injustice came out

Mortal Kombat needs fatalities, they are annoying after a few times but they add enjoyment to the game, and also SALES. MK's reputation is built almost SOLELY on the controversy of fatalities (my son played MK then did a ted bundy on someone wah ;_; ) . I would play MK without fatalities but 75% or more of the people who buy it wouldnt.

Yes. Finishers are one aspect of Mk that no other fighting game has right now. (unless you count ultra combos). They also don't effect the M rating. Gratuitous blood in matches and the x-rays guarantee it to get an M rating with or without finishers.

Also the 200-1000 or so hardcore player may not care about them, but the 1 million or so casual player will care about them, and that goes into their decision to buy the game.

If you're asking if a fighting game needs fatalities then obviously no. But MORTAL KOMBAT 10000000000000% needs them. It's the defining feature of the franchise. If there weren't fatalities, it wouldn't be Mortal Kombat.

Where did I say playing MK will turn you into a killer lol. I've been playing these games since MK1 was released on SNES and I was skipping class when I was like 8-11 years old to go play MK2 and UMK3 at the arcades. I turned out ok I think rofl.

I get that violent video games and movies are all about catharsis. I just don't really get turned on by gratuitous gore violence. There was a point in my life where I loved this kind of stuff. But now I think it's more fun and entertaining when it's cheesy gore meant to be taken lightly and with humour. Not when it's realistic, dark/macabre and super serious.
