P.S. if anyone knows where I can legally download a Windows 8 .iso so I can do a clean install of Win8 on my machine, that'd be swell. Not a "Windows 8 Upgrade" which seems to be all that exists... but a straight up Win8 .iso that won't get me v& would be super

Unless you have MSDN you're out of luck; there is no straight install for Win8 for retail.

Why on earth would you want win8 for a desktop
Because its really Win7, but faster and the start menu replaced with a start screen, and the ability to run Windows Store apps in addition to all the legacy Windows programs.

Win 7 is far better than Win 8 other than that looks like a solid build. I wouldn't wish Win 8 on my worst enemy though.

Windows 8 is "faster" than win 7?
Yes. It uses fewer resources than Windows 7. You do not have to use Metro whatsoever, you can boot to the desktop and use the old start menu just like every other windows ever. You can completely avoid Metro altogether really easily.

Turns out you are able to download Windows 8 Enterprise edition which gives you a win8 ISO usable for clean installs all for free. You only get 90 days on it though, but at least you can buy an upgrade code to bring it up to a full paid version. Pretty awesome solution so you don't have to pay $100+

Do you mean grab a trial edition? I can't think of any other way for a normal person to get the ISO.

Yeah it's a trial of Windows 8 Enterprise Edition. Good for 90 days and to my knowledge it can be upgraded to a regular copy of Windows 8 via any of their numerous upgrade options.

Cool setup, now all you need to do is overclock that CPU and you're golden. As for Windows 8, it's basically the same thing as windows 7 with the exception of the metro menu. Windows 8 was designed with touchscreen in mind. There is a way you can get a full retail copy of windows 8, pre activated, but I don't think this board is appropriate to discuss such things ;)

Not a bad idea at all. Opensource is always better, and they lack the nasty little backdoors micro$oft implements into their OS's. I use tails and ubuntu from time to time.
Only issue is you might need to know exactly how to fix certain problems right off the bat to get it working properly, but from what I understand, recent installations of Ubuntu and its flavors have been getting better about this.

It's the best operation system for current gen games, for example BF4 has had known problems for some people on Win 7 where as Win 8 is far by smoother for gaming.
Then you can just slap on and download a file to make it appear just like Win 7, however this isn't a big issue for alot of people I don't think and I would still remain with Win 7.

This isn't really true. Nor are the performance comments above.

When it comes to performance. On at least 95% of the games out there, frame rate will be within 1% of each other, with the superior OS varying from game to game.

When it comes to games with known problems, this depends on OS and driver versions as well. BF4 has known problems for some people with certain drivers on win7, and the same for win8.

Not to mention there are many games that have compatibility issues with Win8, considering most of them are not even optimized for Win8 since the majority of gamers are still on Win7. You left out the fact that many more games have known problems on Win8 than Win7.

But when it comes down to it, outside of the occasional bugs on newer games, there is "very" little difference in gaming performance from Win7 to Win8. It mostly comes down to which environment you prefer. Saying otherwise is just fanboy'ism.

Ubuntu is the user friendliest linux distro ever. People hear linux and freak out. Linux has become alot more user friendly over the years with easy to use guis and installations. As you mentioned, you will need a basic understanding of terminal to do certain things but thats really easy to learn. They even have a guide at the ubuntu site: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

You should check out tails and get the live cd. Tails is awesome. It's designed to only work with the tor network and is extremely secure.

Yeah, terminal isn't too difficult to get down. Once you learn the more commonly used commands, you're pretty much good to go, and Google exists, so it's not like you're shooting in the dark if you don't know.

My laptop runs Ubuntu. The only reason I ever go back to Windows on that thing is for streaming.

Yea I can imagine. Some people have driver issues and gaming issues as well. Theres alot of windows stuff you can run using wine but it isn't the same. They both have their uses I suppose.

Yep. I don't play many newer PC games, so the gaming issues are minor. Wine does solve a lot for me, too. Love Ubuntu.

Why windows 8 over 7, serious question is it better, faster?
For the most part, it is faster.
Whether it's better is all based upon your preferences. It does have some new desktop apps and UI features but it's nothing too amazing.

Now that you can boot straight into the desktop in 8.1, you'll most likely never see the Start Menu. I just use it to bunch up all my game and application .exes since I like a clean desktop.
