Shang Tsung General Discussion

addition:
smoke is a good partner for shang non the less, his smokebomb assist works great with the groundskull juggles.
when smokes life gets low, you can tag him out to do a
smokebomb assist, bb, db4, df4, df4+block, (rest of combo of choice). about 40%+ for the cost of 2 bars, which isnt
that much in tag team battle.

but now i got a question myself:
i did the smokebomb assist, du4, db4, df4, df4+block and all 6 skulls hit. but when i tried it again a second later the last one
missed and i couldnt do it again, thats why i recomended the other combo before. does the engine change? or have i been superlucky?

hey guys,
i'm starting to get deeper into the tactical aspect of playing shang and am now starting to develop a zoning strategy.
for this i would like to ask for some experience of anyone who's interested!
as an example of what i mean:
against an opp without teleport and in medium to far distance it might be good to perform a ''range check'' = above skull (front),
to see if you opp will advance.
-if he does (dash, jump in), he should get caught by the skull and you start comboing.
-if he doesn't, you are safe most of the time because you can block earlier after above skull. (might be possible to get hit by a projectile,
or a far traveling move but no combos)

now after thinking about a safe startup i thought about developing a chain of skulls to press the opp into the right position (max range) or pressure him to make mistakes.
if you got any suggestions of what might be a safe move in different situations, please post or send me a message.

thx!

So Salty...
Medium ground skull, towards up skull, triple skull to keep the opponent in check, if they advance through step in ~ grd mix up towards and above up skull as it gives massive advantage and triple skull to kill their jumps or just give chip.

As for safe startups, I like b+121 - on block mix up b+1214 to keep them blocking and b+121xxdu2 to keep advantage and make them guess again. Third hit is overhead.
F+34 can be hit confirmed, though it is a little difficult at first - on block xxbb+1 I think is uninterruptible and safer, on hit du+4 combos, or if they're far too defensive, fire an up skull.
I'm no shang player, but that's all that comes to mind right now. If any of it's wrong, let me know.
Peace.

thx synraii, i'll try that out! i use 221 as combostartup at the moment, but didnt know about the overhead in b+121 ;-)
didn't do my homework on that one...

Nightwolf Mourner
It's pretty ridiculous how safe you can make his moves, and that's coming from a Night Wolf player at the moment :)

I don't know if you guys watched WNF but Alex Valle has a sick Shang Tsung. I almost want to main him now after watching some of the stuff he did to poor KrazieBone lol.

Sheeva isn't Goro's wife. Goro is her husband.
That was just brutal. Valle just destoryed everyone with Shang, and the tragedy was that they were cyber sub and raiden.

i think we will see more professional shang tsung players in the future.
even i win nearly 75% of my matches, thanks to unbreakable combos. (and i wouldnt say that i'm that good)

makes me kind of sad i wanted to keep the strength of shang to myself ;-)

oh yeah which reminds me to give some feedback now that psn is up again:
-i think a lot of people don't know the matchup because there hung up on smoke, scorpion, kung lao, raiden etc.
(i played a sonya with insane blockstrings...)
-the groundskull juggles make it possible to do a 25-40% combo anytime you hit, so just a few opportunities are needed
-damage boost on morph is nearly imbalanced if you think about how safe the move is compared to quan chi's buff

and finally i reveal my favorite combo, which i wanted to safe up for a vid but maybe someone is going to be faster:

221, db4, df4, df4block, move back a bit, 4, df4block, du4, fdb+three

46% midscreen combo (i turned the fight around quite often with this one)
just leave the 4 after the first ex-groundskull if opp gets breaker after the 221:

221, db4, df4, df4block, move back a it, du4, fdb+three

that chain is possible no matter where and when you catch your opp with a groundskull examples:

du4,db4,df4,df4block, move back, fdb+three
db4,df4,df4block, move back, du4, fdb+three
df4,df4block, move back, du4,db4, dash fdb+three

shang punishes hard no matter where

I can't seem to get online every time I try to enter my code it says service undergoing maintenance, it has been saying this for quiet a while now.

Where is crossplay?
I'd like to see Valle's Shang as well. I pretty much gave up on him cause my local scene is full of Raidens. I feel like one mistake and you die, I'd like to see how it's done

You're right. Bone wasn't at his best I guess, or maybe he just didn't know how to handle the Shang matchup. Either way, I was hoping for more exiting matches.

But still, you gotta give it to Alex Valle. That guy is such a great player. It's true I haven't watched a lot of top Shang players yet but nonetheless I was impressed by his traps and safe jump set ups.

I'm not gonna lie, Alex Valle alone restored faith in the char for me. I knew he had all the tools to win, but I had no idea how to use them. Obviously, NW is a lot easier to pick up so I went w/him. Shang takes more work but I feel he's more rewarding to win w/

It didn't even seem like valle even put a lot of time in with shang and still won... Nobody in this community has a complete Shang yet since the game is so new, which I believe will allow Shang to stay S tier for many months to come.
