Evo is now over, and MK is probably more alive than it has been for the past couple months. With that being said, we saw some extremely high level play over the weekend, but one character stood on top. Cyrax.

As you guys probably know, PL is my training buddy and we discuss MUs a lot. Over some discussion today, PL mentioned that he doesn't think Kabal is the best anymore and Cyrax is now #1. I mentioned that Kitana and Sonya beats cyrax (imo), and he agreed, but he still feels cyrax is the best.

He also thinks Kitana PROBABLY beats Kabal. I have no say on that as that is his opinion.

I was given the okay to make this thread, so this is not a blow up in any way.

No. Top 3? Abso-fucking-lutely. But he's not better than Kabal.

DJT played the Cyrax/Kabal match-up to absolute perfection three seperate times (and if any Cyrax players HAVEN'T seen his Cyrax at EVO, I'd highly recommend checking it out), but I don't think that's enough to knock Kabal out of the number 1 spot.

Unmatched projectile game and a rushdown game that may be on par with a few others, but certainly not beaten. Kabal is still #1

However, I would not be opposed to seeing Cyrax on top of the MK mountain. If I get proven wrong, I will gladly take that

It's not that farfetched IMHO. If Cyrax can make a puppet out of Kabal by not taking the bait on IAGB and waiting for him to corner himself, what does that say about characters that don't have problems against IAGB?

In turn, what does it say about characters that don't have an air fireball vs Cyrax?

On the flipside, nobody else has a meter nullifying EX net, a resetting command grab and 90% damage all in one package, so this doesn't mean every other character will start butchering holes out of Kabal.

It's all speculative within 3 days, but EVO blew the spectrum wide open. No doubt about it.

Kabal staying number one, he beats EVERY character. Is rax top 3 material? i'd say yes. I believe kenshi comes second then rax third. I do not think lao is better than rax at all.

It's just too hard to ignore Cyrax's ridiculousness. Even if Kabal has full meter and Cyrax hits him with a net, he can get 41% unbreakable for one bar.

Off the top of my head:


cyrax matchups that might be even but i dunno prolly cyrax wins: skarlet, kung lao, sindel (ok a stretch), shang tsung (only if he did more damage, i have a lot of experience with this one)
cyrax matchups that in my opinion are very possibly even: liu kang johnny cage(really believe in this one) kenshi (could be 6-4 kenshi) raiden
cyrax matchups that are very possibly potential losses: jax freddy smoke sonya kitana sektor(debated calling this a definite loss)
cyrax matchups in my opinion that are sure losses: kabal

kabal even matchups: ehhh maybe kung rao and kitana?? nehhhh 6-4 kabal

kenshi bad matchups: kung lao and kabal
kenshi potential even matchups: cyrax skarlet freddy(okay this is a toughy) (this blind asshole beats reptile and smoke you [ban incoming])
kenshi wrecks all else
freddy bad matchups: smoke kabal kung lao
freddy matchups i feel are even or possibly even wins: skarlet kenshi(no way kenshi wins) mileena raiden cyrax (imo this could be in freds favor)
freddy wrecks all else


cyrax preys on mistakes however so if we balanced the risk/reward ratios of the read scenarios matchups might be different

but at the highest level this beast of a character could be anywhere between 2 and 6, but not better than a character who literally beats everyone else if played to perfection.

I have all the respect in the world for PL's accomplishments but I tend to take his opinions on match-ups with a grain of salt. Not because I'm more qualified to comment on the matter, but because he changes his mind every day.

I do think however, that Cyrax is a top 3 character who could well be the second best in the game, or at least, tied for second best. As far as tools go, this characters is fucking ridiculous. This is the obligatory post where I mention his tools: Very good normals. Great pokes (with some great cancel options). A retarded D4 that leads to a terrifying block string/command grab mix-up. Speaking of which, an even more retarded command grab. Bombs control the screen in a shit ton of match ups. An anti air grab that has ridiculous priority (if you think about it, a Cyrax player can literally deal with every single jump in/cross up with this move alone). Preposterous damage (while potentially draining your meter in the process). Huge unbreakable damage. Breaker traps. Did I leave anything out?

And to think that 9 months ago, people were debating whether he was top 5 (thank god for MLG Dallas). Yeah, we're the same community that thinks we know everything about who are the best characters in Injustice a few months after the game's release. It took us almost two years to realize how ridiculous Cyrax is.

Skarlet loses 4-6 to Cyrax, she takes lots of risk on this MU and range actually only makes worse, up close Cyrax has his dumb strings with 9f startup, command grab mixups and +16 on hit D4, Skarlet has none.
Midscreen to fullscreen is all bombs, and net, no meter and she is totally fucked.
