Match-up Discussion When to poke out of pressure

KingRey

I wanted to create this thread to discuss when it's the best time to poke or upper cut out of pressure. An example would be Cage. When he's in your face throwing out f3 pressure when is the best time to attempt to poke out and what moves do you look for? Please list any characters that give you issues when dealing with pressure.

only thing u really can do is uppercut, ex skydrop, or block his d3 an poke or throw back.

after 2,1. after f33. and like axel said, blocking down 3 and poke back. or you could armor out but thats risky.

D3, uppercut, or ex skydrop are your best bets against Cage. The best time to try and get out of his pressure is always after blocking something, or ducking while he's doing a high string. Never try to do anything after getting hit (although it is possible for characters with 6f moves to get out of pressure after getting hit). It's easiest to poke out after blocking a f32, f33, or 21. You can duck and whiff punish 21, 11, and 11f1 as well if you read that Cage will go for these, as they all hit high - easiest punish for these is to just use Quan's uppercut. The last hit of f32 whiffs on a crouch blocking Quan, so you uppercut Cage if he tries to go for f32 against you. While blocking, it's a guessing game, unless the Cage player is being too predictable. Be aware that 21 might be followed up by a f2, which hits overhead, or f33 might be followed by a b3, which also hits overhead. You should be able to react to f33 being blocked in time though, as it is -4. Cage may stagger his f3s as well, and delay the next knee to bait a counterpoke attempt, and either stuff it or block and punish. It really comes down to how the Cage player likes to apply pressure.

also, if you you think he's gonna do a naked f3, block it high and jump over him. otherwise stay ducking and block the overheads.

uhh, no offense but idk if that's good advice.
This negates the random advantage of f3 if you want to jump, but opens up the possibility of eating a f33 xx ex FB or a 11f1. Cage can also AA if he reads the jump by doing 1, 2, dash b3, or another f3 if fast enough (he might even just hit you out of air while pressing buttons just because). You can pick and choose spots to jump out but you have to be careful.

well if u didn't know, cage's f3 has random advantage on duck block...it may or may not happen, but on stand block it has none. thats why i said that.
no one i play does that. most people that try to jump out of my pressure get fwd 3 nut punched or either 11 dash 2 dash 2 dash 44 nut punched. i dont think jumping would be a good option

yeah. its not a good idea to stand block against cage. and i wouldnt jump out either unless you are desperate to get out

you're playing the wrong cage. you wouldn't be jumping out all the time if you were playing me. depends on what level the cage is on i guess. jumping can work but it isnt the best option

by all the time i mean i do it at least once or twice vs almost every cage i play. and if u jump out at the right time u get a full combo punish. so its definitely worth it.

this never happens to me. and i dont see how this happens against a high level cage. if you are stand blocking you are not jumping over me. you say to stand block a fwd 3 and then jump over. you would have to be psychic to know im just gonna do 1 fwd 3 while ur stand blocking. if your stand blocking i'd just fwd 33 ex fireballs or 11f1. or lets say i do hit you with just 1 fwd 3 while ur stand blocking, id 11 and my 11 would catch you. i dont see how jumping over me or any good cage will ever work

Random frame advantage only applies when you're trying to jump out, especially against Cage.

if they go straight from low blocking to standblocking after a foward three just as u do another one, they can then jump if u don't connect anything afterwards. its a bit of a mind game honestly and its a risk, but the reward is good. Its very possible to jump out.

then how come i've seen even reo suggest standblocking a naked f3 if possible....

After blocking his nut punch is a safe bet. That's when I usually lay a pounding on him. I usually start a combo right there, can't remember if you got enough time to jump behind him and start a comb safely but i think so. Usually I walk backwards and let him slip up thinking his combos will reach then punish too, from the ground. It's very risky jumping towards a good cage.

v.s smoke, wait for the kick / slap combo and wait one more half sec just to see if he's the type to finish with a smoke bomb. If he's not, it's very safe to uppercut right after blocking that second hit. If he jumps, chances are he's gonna teleport. If you can read it, a teleport kick might work there. Really the same applies to raiden, except that he can teleport at the end of a combo so waiting that extra split second helps, quan has a pretty snappy uppercut so you can afford to feel it out.

Something that is kind of generic but i've found to be very useful lately is that if you're a slow character, counter attacking is more productive than trying to attack directly. If you use sheeva you'll see what I mean. Especially true when it's sheeva vs sheeva, it's almost like whoever does something *second* always wins.

The other thing is that if an opponent is very forward momentum during combos, jumping forwards helps. Then you can teleport when you are right over them and they're still in the middle of the combo.

idk. how long ago was it when he said that? either way its still not really good advice. stand blocking against cage is nothing but getting d3, ex fireballs, and 11f1 all day.
