I main Liu Kang and I don't think I will ever have a sub. I also use hitbox stickless arcade.

I just started playing this game not too long maybe last week. I like going around the forums to see some strategy and how can I improve my game. People saying fundamental this fundamental that and I was wonder what are the BASIC stuff I need to improve my Liu Kang or in general?

Fundamentals are sort of what rather than just being applied to MK9, is an ideology stemming from all fighting games.

For example, if you see someone throwing out a punch, your first instinct is not to put out your face and inspect the mass of flesh trucking towards you; what you do is avoid any way possible to obtain damage.

That said, there are fundamentals of MK9, but that is more to do with what makes it unique from other fighting games. Such as deliberating losing a round to gain meter advantage that next round based on MK9's current meter system.

Personally, I find that while it can be explained, it should be something experienced firsthand through trial and error.

Hope this is clear.

Being able to anti air properly, punish unsafe whiffed and blocked moves, properly space yourself, and having good footsies in general is having good fundamentals.
The footsies article that SunnyD linked is a good start and I recommend it
