What's new

What are resets?

Now, anyone who's interacted with me pretty much knows I'm a noob (albeit, a noob who talks... a lot).

Recently, a buddy of mine (while we were playing SFIV) told me he left MK due to it's combo system.

When I asked what about it he didn't like, he said "there are no combo resets in the game at all."

Now... I really have no idea what he means by that >.<

Someone mind explaining to me what they are, and what resets there are?

And, considering they're my mains, do Sub-Zero, Freddy, or Quan Chi have any?

Thanks in advance.

Umm, no offense to your friend but he sounds like he didn't spend much time in this game because some characters do have resets. Basically, from my understanding, a reset is something that leaves you in a standing position ending a combo, instead of a normal combo ender, and will also reset the damage. What it does, it denies your wake up and puts you at an advantage to keep attacking when your opponent is forced to react to mix ups and strings because he recovers slower than you.

Cyrax has a broken unescapable reset where after EX Bomb he can drop medium bomb, dash in, go 3,3, Buzz Saw and drop your opponent onto the bomb, which is unblockable so it will reset damage and will allow Cyrax to combo on.

Other rest moves are... Cage's Nut-Punch, Shang's Soul Steal, Sonya's 1,1,2 ender, Kabal's F4, all of those leave the opponent standing and at long recovery for you to come in with more mix-ups and pressure strings.

For Subby, he has one, but it's getting patched out... 2,1,2 freeze, Ground Freeze, Charge B2... Reset
Quan-Chi... if you sky drop in the middle of a combo it's a reset.

Freddy, don't know.

A reset is exactly what it sounds like. It resets the damage scaling so its like your starting a new combo. Ideally resets are supposed to be 50/50's. Mixups that are escapable. That is not always the case in MK9. There are many resets in MK9 that are guaranteed and yet still reset the damage scaling like its a new combo. Cyrax is the biggest known offender of this type of reset. Depending on how much meter Cyrax wishes to burn he can get upwards of 90% damage in one combo that is inescapable except by burning your own meter to breaker.

Subzero also has a guaranteed reset off of his 2,1,2,ice ball. After freezing them in mid air you can EX ground freeze and dash in and do the B+2 full charge. Unlike off of 2,2,ice ball where the opponent can just do nothing and not get refrozen, there is no escape when it is done this way. The B+2 resets the damage and Subzero gets an unscaled 2,1,4,slide or (for those with good execution) B+1(whiff)2,2,1,2,slide. Sub can get over 50% damage for only using one bar of meter where he used to have to burn XRAY to get that kind of damage before this was discovered.

All of these resets are being patched out in the next patch so there is really no reason to learn them if you havent already.

Just to clarify, subs will remain right?, but it just won't be inescapable. Won't It will still land if the opp does anything but stay neutral?

Not to be rude, but I think your friend has special needs. Or maybe he doesn't know what resets are. In that case though he shouldn't be talking about them either.

Resets are basically moves that leave your opponent standing at the end/in the middle of a combo. This serves two purposes; it avoids a knockdown so you won't have your game messed up by wake-ups and it also give you the opportunity to start a new combo with perhaps, a mix-up.

As mentioned, there are plenty of those: Kabal's F4, Quan Chi's sky drop works as a reset too, Cage's nutpunch, Stryker's pistol (not sure about this one, I think it does reset.)

Ah, okay. So all resets are going to be removed in the upcoming patch then?

Hmm, can that be considered a positive, or a negative?

The reset situations themselves may still be there but they will not be guaranteed. They will be escapable. Which will render many of the ones that cost meter moot. No Subzero player will ever use 2,1,2 again midscreen when he can get the SAME reset situation off of 2,2,ice ball and not have to burn meter for the priviledge. So in essence, yes they are being taken out or rendered useless.

Yes, but again, why on earth would you do 2,1,2,ice ball and burn meter on EX ground freeze to get the exact same 50/50 you can get for no meter using 2,2,ice ball?? The 2,1,2,ice ball reset will be useless and a total waste of meter after the patch.

You're right man. I was stuck thinking in terms of the small% more dmg from 212 vs 22. But your right, totally not worth a bar. Thx for the lesson. Im a lil behind the sz curve :D. Stayed on that scorpion bandwagon a bit too long. Lol

So... when is this patch coming anyway? Last time I heard it would be "Sometime this year", so it might be useful to learn some of those resets until then.
Don't own the game yet, arriving next week -.-
