Want to Start Streaming Soon - What Do I Need?

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong folder.

I'm looking to start streaming soon, but I don't really know where to start. I know I need to get a capture card, but I don't wanna go in blind and end up buying some piece of shit. Can someone recommend a good one? I'm looking to spend probably around $200 or so on it. Would like to be able to stream in at least 720p. I'm not all that worried about 1080.

Do the cards come with their own software or is that separate? Also my monitor only has one HDMI port, which my console is occupying. Will that be an issue?

If someone could give me a quick crash course or something on what I need, I would tremendously appreciate it. Thanks.

A great resource is 8wayrun's 3-part series:

There are some better capture cards than what he recommended, I personally prefer the Avermedia Gamebroadcaster HD (model c127), which is on par with Black Magic's Intensity Pro, but costs less and is compatible with almost everything. If you have any specific questions after reading that guide, let me know.

Happy streaming!

Edit: Don't pay the big $$ for and HDFury, you can use any decent HDMI to component converter, I got mine off amazon.

You will need another monitor or tv (I have my computer hooked up to my tv via hdmi) because you need to monitor the stream and make changes as you play and watch the chat etc.

As for capture card. I have the avermedia. Hd broadcaster. Comes with a capturing program to capture hd video But not for streaming. You will need a streaming program such as xsplit which is what I use. It's free but some features are only available to members. But what with they have should be enough.

Now. If you streaming off a ps3 you need to find something to remove the hdcp. Which blocks you from capturing or streaming via ps3 with hdmi. If you using a Xbox that's not an issue.

One way to get around it. Is to get a hdmi splitter (which you would need anyways). That removes hdcp. Also avermedia program tends to remove it as well.

Reason you need a hdmi splitter is to split the hdmi signal coming from the ps3 to both your capture card and to the monitor you will be playing on.

I use to use a hdmi to component. But my hdmi splitter strips the hdcp as well as the avermedia program. Try it out.

Cat, not every HDMI splitter will strip dhcp; I know mine doesn't. The avermedia program will display a picture from an hdcp source, but if you try to "direct show" the aver card in xsplit, you get the hdcp error msg. I know screen region capturing will work, but you lose the many benefits of direct showing the avermedia card in xsplit and dont have to worry about opening a browser/stream chat or window in that screen region. But if it works good enough for you capturing the screen region, cool.

Yeah screen region wise. How do you get the game sound using direct capture? Whenever I did it using the same component converter that you listed I never got the sound. I would get the picture but no sound. This is using the ps3 of course

You have to go into xsplit and under edit channels, then general. Then change microphone to your audio source (line in or aux in sometimes). How are you getting your game and commentary audio to the PC currently? If they are put together with a hardware mixer like what I do, then you just use the red/white stereo out into a 3.5mm to your sound card, something like this:

Hope this helps!

Oh I see. So you basically use the microphone audio source as the game audio. I have mics which I use plugged in and use it there as a microphone source. The game sound is usually off the screen cap. I'll just try it your way and use a visual audio mixer to mix the mics and game sound into a virtual input which I will use as the microphone source. Doing direct capture will make things easier. Thanks!

Ok.. Whenever you come across it again, let me know what the brand is -- I want to make sure I get one that strips HDCP.

Does anyone stream off laptops commonly? I saw a section on the 8wayrun page that Han linked, but I'm thinking most setups run off desktops.

Just looking to see what people's experiences are with a laptop setup.

Hell yeah, I got my stream equipment in, all set up and ready to go (thanks BDMao88). Will hopefully start streaming some offline violence this week. Might do some online here and there even though it's terrible just for fun.

www.twitch.tv/3piecesofbread is the channel if anyone wants to follow.

Most of the offline streams will probably consist of eklectic (Sektor, Raiden, Kitana) Ermaculate_Slim (Ermac, Cage, Quan, and like 3/4 of the cast) and myself (Sonya, Scorpion, a few others) beating each other senseless.

How do I record when playing on a ps3 and on an asus vh236h monitor? What exactly do I need? I don't have a pc, only a mac.
