So I didn't play MK9 competitively, but I'm told that the IGAU is believed to have a similar, if not identical Wakeup system. I was just discussing with another member who explains to me that unlike the fighters I'm used to (Capcom, SNK), the timing and window of invincibility is different.
I've been spending a good hour or so a day working on Wakeup timing with my characters. My issue is that I would set the AI to knock me down, then I would perform the Wakeup with no problem. The moment i threw in a meaty attack (Lantern b1, KF slide, Lantern Minigun) into the AI mix after the knockdown, I could almost never perform the Wakeup again.
The member I was speaking to explained to me that the MK9 engine, as he believes he recalls, worked like this: Say you get up (And are vulnerable) by frame 12 (Just pulling numbers). There is a window to perform the Wakeup attacks, and it's from frame 10-14 (Again, just numbers). So, if I input the special by 14, I will get the Wakeup. BUT, if I'm HIT by a meaty at frame 12 (First vulnerable frame) my wakeup will NOT come out since I did not input it fast enough.
Is this correct, at least for MK9? Maybe I misunderstood him. However, this feels like it makes sense. Now I won't claim to be an expert, but I've been playing FG's since I was 16 (25 now) competitively, like many here, and I think I feel confident to say that when I do a Wakeup without the meaty, I can "see" when I need to input it (Based on my timing). When I get hit by a meaty, I can definitely see in the animation that it's not reaching the same frame. This is why I believe him, and something I'm totally not used to.
So was the explanation correct? Are there vulnerable frames that overlap the window for Wakeup Attacks?? I assume this means I can still properly wake up against any meaty, however the timing is much stricter against a meaty attack.
Sorry for the long post! I have a bad habit of not getting my point across in much less words, ha ha.
