I beat it the other day actually. One of the best games I've ever played.
Also, there are no zombies in the game.

It isn't another zombie game. You fight things that most would classify as zombies but they aren't the type of zombies that you see in movies for example the dead coming back to life. You fight humans as well and it is the only Survivor horror game that really implements the survival aspect. Once you beat it you won't think of it as another zombie game.

Humans, both armed and otherwise, and cordyceps.

Cossner I enjoyed it but I played it after I heard everybody and their brother tell me how godlike it all was. It didn't hit that expectation for me

In terms of actually playing the game, it's pretty fun. Not really fun, not astounding gameplay, but it doesn't suck to play through, and the harder difficulties are challenging enough to be worth playing.

The story, design, script, acting, graphics, sound, score, etc. are all off the fucking charts. It has real emotion, and it does something new with the zombie genre (thank Christ).
