The Killing Joke (Spoiler)

I just finished reading the Killing Joke. After The joker shot Barbra, took photos, and attempted to make Gordon go insane Batman ended the story of by sharing a laugh with him? I get that origins being told were supposed to make you feel sorry for him, but he's pure evil. I couldn't feel empathy for him. I'm new to comics, but I haven't read one I didn't like except this one... The end of it anyway. What are you opinions on how it ended?

Actually that was just how Joker saw it. IIRC the ending was supposed to be up-in-the-air.

Thought I heard somewhere that the whole thing was supposed to be a one-off, but certain elements got brought into the whole DCU and that's why Babs was paralyzed for 20 comic years.
