The 2nd Great Game Crash

Many of have heard of the video game crash back in the day and lately many have been speculating the next crash is on its way and absolutely unavoidable.

Why many will ask, well it has to do with many of the really nasty practices happeneing lately.
EA decided it was going to start putting microtransactions in every new release they make, because supposedly Dead Sace 3 was such a huge hit even though it completely undersold. IPs are being butchered and refocused for broader appeal, though it still hasn't shown to really make the games sell better than before. Capcom and their on disk DLC fiascos, more and more big publishers are forcing always online single player, the next M$ console is rumoured to be always online only and will also ban the use of any used games. As well as the insne pre-order bonuses and all the milking from day one DLC. The horrid release of Diablo III has been heralded by many as the beginning of the end. Its also becoming more apparent that consumers are starting to hold the wallet, SFxT greatly missed Capcom's mark, Dead Space 3 greatly undersold, Aliens CM sales droped drastically after its horrid release. What I am saying is people seem to be getting more cautious of where they spend their cash.

Is this really the beginning of 2nd game crash, or is all just hogwash. My assessment is that its not a crash that is coming, but the fall of once great companies that went the direction of pure greed and the rise of newer more consumer friendly organization emerging, such as we may see some of the indie devs rising up more. What do you all think?

What a day. What a lovely day.
I think what we need is for companies, such as Capcom, to pull their heads out of their asses and realize DLC shouldn't be what makes for a good game. As for Microsoft's new console; I don't think they'd make it online only. They'd be potentially losing a hefty amount of sales by doing something like that, it may be an option given to the player, but I don't see it being a standard.

I agree with M$ and there console I really think it was just a PR stunt to gain more anticipation for its release coming, not to mention if they did that and PS4 wasn't going to do it then M$ had already lost the next console war. You are correct these companies need stop abusing the DLC thing, I pray that when the next gen console come out they at least enforce some better policies towards DLC and at least start restricting there ability to abuse it. Its just that aletly I have been seing some very well known IPs underselling badly, which is weird to see since these are IPs that tend typically sell like crazy. BTW Cossner what new IPs are you really referring to, from my knowledge almost everything has been either a sequal or a rehash, no pun intended.

Mobile, international franchises, asian market and indie games. You have a very shallow view of the industry that only includes triple AAA titles released in America, apparently lol.

I am honestly scared for the future of gaming. I don't want all-digital distribution and microtransactions to plague my gaming experience.

Just let me buy the fucking game and enjoy it without having to be online and continuously pay more money to do so!

All digital is coming but not for years and years, we're not even close to having the resources for strictly digital. Microtransactions are not the future, it may be the future of EA but not gaming in general.
