Kind of odd mechanic I've been messing with the past hour or so. In mk9 when you first started moving there was this tiny bit of a "speed up" period, especially when changing direction. I'm MKX, it's exactly the opposite, when you first press a direction you speed up, you get this kind of....half dash. I dunno what to call it. Seems like kitanas is the fastest both back and forwards. Just try it out! I'm at work so I can't post a video or anything.
Also, you can space your inputs and do it repeatedly, returning to neutral seems to let you get the boost again.
