There is still no standard rule for stage selection yet. Most recently, at TFC, the ruling was double random initially or upon a stage change request; however, it wasn't enforced at all as long as both players agreed to a different selection process.

Now the reason I imagine they would choose to ignore the rule would be the possibility to get fucked over by whichever stages are generated.

Due to the fact that a stage can have a large impact on a match, the random stage rule came about to attempt to prevent an extra, unfair advantage, or at least have it be under more fair circumstances. Then a double random 50/50 stage rule was brought into play to prevent counter picking based upon the randomly generated stage in the background. My opinion is that although the process is "fair" it could possibly lead to a far less unfair scenario, having to play on two stages favoring your opponents character over your own, which is why most people didn't use it.

My argument is that whatever standard is set, it should help promote a fair set, instead of having the question of fairness being focused upon the process.

I have thought of a stage selection process that is fair based upon stage/map selection processes of other competitive titles; the process would be double random, loser's pick, with a stage veto:

1. First each player selects a stage to veto before going into the character select screen. The stages chosen will not be played if they are generated later. If at any time a veto'ed stage is generated randomly, the other randomly generated stage will be used.

2. The initial map should be selected by a double random 50/50.

3. If the loser wishes to go to a new stage, the loser would have a choice between the two randomly generated stages.

4. If the loser chooses to change their character, the stage selection becomes another double random 50/50.

5. If ever both veto'ed stages are two stages are randomly generated then fuck me right? But seriously, if this happens just exit and re-enter the character select screen.(Figured I should say this despite it being obvious before some idiot jumps on my case with "what ifs".)

This is my potential solution. The stage veto can prevent a situation in which a player is forced to play on a map that heavily unfavors them, or that they dislike, while still promoting the fairness of the current double random process. Also by allowing the loser to choose between the two randomly generated stages would help prevent a situation in which the loser is forced to play unfavored stages back to back.

A standard needs to be set in place. I believe that the issues we have been having as a community to set a standard is due to the fact that we have been unable to create a fair process, that can guarantee a fair set due to the unique stage impact of IGAU. The process above is fair, and can guarantee that the set will be fair.

What do you think?

I like the way GGA weeklies do it, random, and re-random if the loser chooses.

To the people saying your opponent can counter-pick the stage in the background of the character select screen, guess what? You can too.

Too bad you don't have this as an option. It's quick and simple.
