Technically most of the new character wouldn't have existed or in some cases been relevant if it wasn't for Raiden and him messing with the timeline. Sonya and Johnny never got together in the original timeline so Cassie wasn't a thing , Shao Khan was still alive so Kotal didn't become Emperor of Outworld( if he was around in the og timeline). It's weird when you think about it.
