Smoke on the portal stage during online match?

Has anyone had any luck getting to fight smoke when TOASTY! appears during online play on the portal stage? I had it pop out the other day maybe I hit it in time, maybe I didnt?

It works, but the lag makes it hard for the buttons to register half of the time.

Sorry I should have clarified... I got it in casual. Still trying to make it happen in ranked.
