Side Stepping: An Important Manuever or Just a Neat Extra?

Basically what I'm trying to ask is. What is the importance of Side Stepping in this game, when you are in competitive play or generally good skilled play? I imagine sure if you can read a projectile side stepping it and going into run jabs or whatever may come in handy, but how often? Is it something that really changes the gameplay drastically and puts a new benchmark in skill.

Or is it more less Just an average extra gimmick you use once in awhile?

it is very important, only Rnx2 tho, d+run is useless unless in specific situations

I don't usually sidestep in MK4, because when I want to sidestep, it never happens whether i did down+run or runx2, and when it does, i still wind up getting hit. i gave up afterwards because it wasn't working for me.
