Strange to see a gamer who is foreign to the ways of Pokemon. lol
Have you ever played any Japanese-made RPG with a turn-based battle system? That's pretty much how battles are here. Basically, you start out as a mute protagonist (yourself) in your home town. From there, you choose one of three starter Pokemon. Afterwards, you journey to other towns, and encounter other Pokemon through random battles. Here, you can choose to kill them in order to level up or catch them using "Pokeballs." The "Pokedex" tracks all the Pokemon you collect. The goal of the game is to reach 8 Pokemon gyms--located in every other town--defeat all the gym leaders, stop whatever evil organization is present in the game you're playing, and finally, defeat the Elite Four to become Pokemon Champion.
After completing the game, you can try to collect every Pokemon (impossible without trading), including the legendary Pokemon of the game you're playing, or play the game competitively. The meta-game actually has a significant amount of depth.
Essentially, every Pokemon game is the same thing, only with different Pokemon, so you should obviously get the latest installment (Pokemon Black/White 1 or 2) since it's undoubtedly the same shit as its predecessors, only with more content.
Edit: And get Resident Evil Revelations and/or Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance for 3DS too. <3
