Rumor - Microsoft May Change Name of 'Rare'

Meelow over at NEOGaf.com recently made a post concerning a tweet from what looks to be a student and designer in the gaming world from the Netherlands, that read "Funny that you mention Rare, just got word that MS is thinking about a name change for the studio due next year". While this is purely speculation in the matter of it being anything real or not, one must wonder if this could possibly be a puzzle piece to Microsoft's plans regarding their recent renewal of the Killer Instinct trademark, which went public back on September 17th.

Rare died a long time ago, the name change is needed since its a completely different team as it were back in the day and they're clearly not bothered about the same franchises.

I can agree that there should be no comparison between retro, and rare.. because Retro is vastly superior. Emily Rogers is a fool of the highest caliber.

A name change is appropriate. To my knowledge, the only actual RARE employee is Grant Kirkhope, the sound designer. And even then I'm not sure if he still works for them.

Everybody else who worked on the Rare classics are now Crytek UK. As they were picked up from being Free Radical. Either way, I seriously hope they don't give the job to Rare for making the new KI if it comes out. They aren't going to know what they're doing.

I hope she realizes this is what ruined Rare in the first place lol. To this day the N64 still feels more like the "Rareware 64" to me.

Retro Studios are no better either, turning one of the greatest SNES franchises of all time into into the biggest waggle clusterfuck I've ever seen.

FYI, they were working on timesplitters for gamecube during perfect dark's development, they were possibly the most organised developer i've ever seen. :p

And Star Fox Adventures for that matter.

Believe me man, I have no grudges against Rare, I commend them for what they did while Nintendo left them to do their dirty work, I just think Microsoft takes too much flack for the rift caused between their employees.

There's a nice controller mod for DKCR that makes it pretty much perfect. ;)

Also, I think Retro recently moved to a bigger building. So I have a feeling they may be moving on up dat Nintendo ladder. Hopefully a chance for a new IP or 2D Metroid.

And OmegaK is completely correct, Timesplitters was pretty much the modern day Perfect Dark with more modes and huge corny roster selections. Who doesn't want a robot monkey shootout in a Chinese restaurant?

Critical acclaim lol, 3rd Strike is one of the most revered and respected fighters among the FGC yet barely got 80% in aggregation. GTA4 is unanimously considered a disappointment and is the highest rated game of the current generation. RE6 is getting bad review scores for everything that was wrong with RE4 (yet, RE4 is one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time). Try again.

Oh and by the way:
your a fool

To be fair Street Fighter III's pretty overrated, the roster's very unbalanced, the soundtrack's EHHH, and they turned Guile into an emo Frenchman.

Still fun though and it had Hugo Andore, so it's all good. I think an 80% suits it honestly.

I agree, (besides the music, they nailed it soooo hard) but that's not why it was a commercial failure. Too many casuals whined about characters they don't even use not being in the SFIII series. Vega and T.Hawk are running wild on those SF4 AE servers right guys?!

1. The majority thinks the game is great for a reason, you fool.
2. I'm on a cell phone you jerk. Cut me some slack. * You're. Satisfied?
1. Considering the general demographic of the Wii, I ain't surprised. There's a difference between intuitive motion controls (NSMB or Galaxy), and then there's making me stop what I'm doing to go full retard with the Wiimote for something I pressed a button to do 15 years ago. (DKCR)
2. Still, think before you speak.

Yeah, I agree that whining about the characters kinda stagnated SFIV with the classic characters. I'd take Hugo, Necro, Q, Urien, and some more new characters over a lot of the older ones. I think I like ran into maybe two Gens from my experience with SFIV online.

Hopefully if SFV is really being made, they'll mix up the roster instead of giving us the same characters.

If I had to guess, it might be a marketing thing. When you think about games made by Rare, you think about games like Killer Instinct, the Banjo Kazooie series, the Donkey Kong Country Series, Jet Force Gemini, and the N64 version of Goldeneye...

These games, for all intents and purposes, are generally though of as Nintendo games... most people barely even realize that the Banjo games are on the 360 now.

I would think this is to formally cut ties to Rare's affiliation with Nintendo and define the games that the company is re-releasing and new games being released as being affiliated with and recognizable as Microsoft games instead of Nintendo games.

1. "Ain't" ..wtf? Pot, meet kettle. Talk about irony.
2. You must have already gone full retard prior to dkcr's launch if you can't handle its "waggle".

I don't intend to come off mean or anything.. I just loved the shit out of that game and found the motion controls did little to hamper the experience.. great game.

The difference between resi 4 and 6 was that capcom weren't trying to cater to all the old fans they lost in 4. And they also weren't trying to have a bunch of old resi locations to try and trick everyone back into it with 20 minutes of "nostalgia".

4 was an amazing game. And it was clearly different, so you know what you're getting into. It had that really intense texas chainsaw massacre vibe. 6 is just an over the shoulder version of outbreak but with shit loads more guns and all the scares taken out.

Country returns was terrible.

It had no reason to be called donkey kong country, as everything that was in country was removed in returns. Expect for the jungle japes music. It was just a generic jungle platformer ruined completely by gimmicky controls.
