Last week at Wednesday Night Fights, Street Fighter 4 again took priority over IGAU pools on stream. Per usual, a number of great players made it down, including Chris G, who was visiting the area for SDCC. We joined the Injustice action in Losers Semis, where Krayzie's trusty Catwoman was about to face Wonder Chef and his Green Lantern. Although Wonder Chef has become known as a character chameleon of sorts, Green Lantern has been a solid character for him throughout. Chef started out the first game sitting on a comfortable life lead, but a wakeup Cat Dash and followup overhead helped bring Krayzie back to even. After Chef took the first game, playing near flawlessly in the 2nd half, an an early life advantage in Game 2 allowed him force Krayzie to play his game. Making Catwoman come to him, Chef was able to punish almost all of Krayzie's offensive attempts and took the match to advance 2-0.
Losers Finals found Chef facing off against the original Dark Horse of Wednesday Night Fights, Emperor Theo. Theo won his first WNF 2 weeks ago and made his way to a very impressive 5th place finish at EVO. This time, Chef brought out his General Zod to face Zod's comic universe nemesis, Superman. With Theo racing out to an early lead, Chef was forced to clash when Theo had about 170% life remaining. Chef mounted a comeback, but once Theo readjusted he was able to whiff punish and zone Chef out for the win, leading Aris to comment that "this guy [the character] isn't good enough". With Theo grabbing a similar lead to start game 2, it looked like Chef's run might be done for the night.
In the second round however, Chef wasted no time, catching Theo in a variety of Zod's setups. With Theo falling for one trap after the other, Chef swiftly regained control of the match, and eventually grabbed the life lead, forcing Theo to clash. By the time the match was over, Chef was left with about 65% life, and Theo was left smiling and shaking his head in disbelief while onlookers applauded from the background. But in Game 3, Theo perfected Chef out of his first lifebar and again looked poised for victory. When Chef released his trait however, everything quickly began to go downhill for Theo. With Aris shouting "This character is cheap!" in approval, Chef fought his way back to a narrow life lead, as both players began to chip each other down to their last 5%. And a last-second jumping meter-burned Zod Charge literally stole the match out of the air, as the arcade went crazy and Chef advanced while smiling ear to ear.
This setup a Grand Finals between Chef and RDK Tyrant, two players who know each other well. Tyrant, riding a victory fron the previous week, has been sticking with America's Favorite Character Solomon Gundy as of late. In a wildly unpredictable and highly entertaining match, Tyrant and Chef went back and forth, each getting the better of the other until Chef was finally able to narrowly eke out a win. With Tyrant catching on to a lot of the Zod shenanigans, he barreled into the 2nd match with authority, slamming Zod all over the stage and punishing everything. Although Chef was able to make it competitive again, Tyrant eventually needed only one more combo to win, and he came rumbling across the stage full-bore as Chef threw everything Ferris Aircraft had to offer at him. But undeterred, Tyrant finally corned Chef and hammered out the win.
The 3rd match was as unpredictable as the first, but towards the end Chef was able to frustrate Tyrant by putting all manner of things on the screen; and he closed the match with a low laser to reset the bracket. The first game of the new set was convincing for Tyrant, as he armored through everything and never allowed Chef to establish a rhythm. The second game had everyone on the edge of their seats, as a variety of near-misses and close calls found the two competitors battling tooth and nail over the course of the match. But Tyrant was able to catch Chef on a backdash towards the end and secure himself the victory.
This was probably one of the most exciting Grand Finals sets to date at Wednesday Night Fights, and will be a treat to watch for anyone who missed it. With Tyrant notching his 2nd win in a row, he now has 4 WNF victories and his Grundy is looking stonger than ever.
Note: Tonight at WNF will be a special treat, as the Talented Terry Bros., Denzell (the MK9 EVO 2013 Champion, as well as 2nd place IGAU finisher) and Malik Terry of Las Vegas, will be making their way down to Super Arcade to jump into the fray. Be sure to watch tonight on LevelUpLive (if Injustice is shown) for what should be a memorable night.
