Question about blocking in MKX

On PS4 I do press and hold R2 in order to block attacks.
But how does it work on wakeup?
Do I need to press R2 exactly at the moment my character stands up in order to block or what?
When I press R2 + holding the button when my character is still on the ground he gets hit when standing up again although I have pressed R2 and I am holding block.
When I press R2 too late and when my character is standing up I get hit again.
This happened now a few times and I am right now kinda confused.
Just lost to a Liu Kang player who did the same string over and over 8 times on me when I was trying to block on wakeup in the corner and I ended up not being able to block anything.

Sry if thats a stupid question but I am kinda confused now.

Was he doing a low or overhead string? And are you sure you were blocking at the right hit level?

you might not know how to block some strings just yet. You are fine you can block while knocked down. You don't have to wait to block

I blocked high because that poke looked like a mid
it only happened vs Liu so far

That's happened to me too, against erron black I would know he wanted to go for the low so I hit down block, and I stay on the ground and when I do get up I just get hit with it anyway, it with the rest of the string.

A friend of mine is having problems with this aswell. I don't seem to notice it much but still experienced it. I don't know if any of you guys have an explanation/solution to this.
