People in the fighting game community are being sent packages related to a game called "Breakaway" which will be revealed tonight at 6PM PDT on Twitch (link to their Twitch above). Of course the game is by Amazon Game Studios, and after looking around on Twitter it does seem that Double Helix -- which Amazon purchased around 2 years ago -- is involved with the project.

I remember hearing/reading a while back that Double Helix was developing a game for PC -- I'm assuming that the game will most likely be coming to PC, but I'm not 100% sure.

What I do know that is on Amazon Game Studio's website, they are saying that they are looking for people to help create multiple AAA PC games: https://www.amazon.jobs/team/amazon-game-studios?base_query=&loc_query=&job_count=10&result_limit=10&sort=relevant&team_category[]=amazon-game-studios&cache

I also noticed that on the game's Twitter page (https://twitter.com/PlayBreakaway) they followed Curse (https://www.curse.com/) which is kinda weird... maybe they are planning something special?

Lastly, they posted over 6 character teasers for the game on Twitter: https://twitter.com/PlayBreakaway/media It looks like there will be Knights, Wizards, Cowboys and more.

My guess on the game: Breakaway will be a free-to-play fighting game with similar business models to Smite and other MOBAs (earnable characters for free, premium special skins, characters added every month or two, etc). I get this feeling because of a couple reasons:

  • Double Helix already has experience with free-to-play fighting games (KI Season 1).
  • It's a new FG (assuming) and making it free-to-play will get more people interested and start playing.
  • They followed Curse on Twitter, which I think mainly has partnerships(?) with free-to-play games (not 100% sure about this).
  • This sounds dumb, but the game's art style reminds me of MOBAs -- which are mainly free-to-play.
Your thoughts?

It's actually worth noting that apparently some of the people involved with the project are actually former MOBA devs. So it could go either way, MOBA or fighting game.

I liked the game way better than it was all DH.
What do you mean?
