Go to hell.
So... it's a lot better and more fun than NG3. Right of the bat, if you like hack 'n' slash, ninjas, or Ninja Gaiden I would get this game. That said, it's not as good as NGB or NG2 by any means.
Dismemberment is back, and so are all the weapons I've come to love. Game is much faster, much more enemy diversity, and enemies are heaps more aggressive. They will also gang bang the shit out of you if they can. The return of a charge-able UT is welcomed, and very needed (we will get to that.) For those of you who played NG2, crystal skulls now serve as markers for tests of valor in which (so far as I've gotten) you fight a couple waves of increasingly hard baddies, and then a boss. These bosses are throwbacks to past NG bosses, ala the first Ninja Gaiden's demon samurai Doku serves as the boss of the first test. There are multiple Ninpos now, but you still have to get your bar charged completely to use it.
Now there is an unlock system that you have to progress through by spending your karma points if you want full access to combos, damage, moves, etc. You also buy costumes this way.
A lot of subtle things have also been changed, like unit composition as well as monsters/demons and ninjas added from past NG games. You can also unlock three characters to swap in instead of Ryu, who have different types of strengths and weaknesses compared to Ryu like speed or strength. Ryu remains my favorite.
There is multiplayer (skip it) and a welcome thousand mission tower mode (I like this). The tower missions get extremely hard as you progress.
Lastly, this game is fucking hard. Not unfairly so, but ut has returned to it's roots. It isn't NG2 Master Ninja bad, but it's definitely a welcome challenge especially the tests of valor.
This is what NG3 should have been, but Itagaki is missed. Very enjoyable IMO and a rewarding experience. On a generous day, 8/10, but I will go with a 7.5.At 40 dollars though, very worth it. A lot of game here.
