New to the site!

Hey everyone, I played Mortal Kombat for a bit about a year ago but sold it. Then a week ago I had a massive urge to go buy it again and to actually get good at it this time by learning combos and discussing strategy :) . Ive hardly played any fighting games, and Mortal Kombat was the first one I ever bought so be prepared cos I'm gonna be asking a lot of noob questions aha. For the minute I just need to ask should I keep using my xbox d pad or should I get something else like an arcade pad? What other options are good?

Well, you've come to the right place, and right when MK9 was getting hyped up at the beach. Welcome! :)

As for your controller choices, the majority will usually recommend the Playstation 3 pad as it seems to be better-suited for fighting games...but it all depends on personal taste, really.

Welcome dude :).
About Xbox's Dpad, if you don't feel it comfortable, buy an arcade stick. I have a stick but only use it for SF and Tekken, i can do everything in MK9/Injustice with my PS3 pad.

I personally alternate between stick and dpad.
Moves that can be done in with a swinging thumb motion like:
:d:l (input) / :d:r (input) / :r:d:l (input) / :l:d :r (input)
I use the stick. I also use the stick for jumping forward or backward.
However moves which require precision or a single movement like:
:l:r (input) / :r:l (input) / :d:d (input) / :u:u (input)
I use the dpad (even if it is poor on the xbox). I also use the dpad for dashing (for both directions) and blocking (where back is block)
Obviously I don't always stick to this as the match begins to heat up and neither should you but I found it was a good base to get familiar with the controls and inputs. What's most important is that you find whats comfortable for you :)
So maybe its best to try out your moves, whether they're to a combo or not, with both stick and dpad and see which feels better for you. You're not bound by cosmic law to commit to one so you can change if you want :)
Also with the way most fighting games work, if you're fast enough, you can alternate between dpad and stick, so that each input feels easy and smooth.
Best of luck!

Thats awesome advice man thanks a lot :) Maybe I wont have to shell out 100 pound for an arcade stick or 70 pound for a top controller with a decent d pad! I best get learning those combos, except for Johnny cage its really hard because its like BP, dash, BP, dash, BP, dash just to keep the combo going, I've only had the game for three days but I haven't been able to to that yet.

I use a controller, probably shoulda mentioned that, by stick i mean analogue stick on the controller and by dpad i mean dpad on the same controller
