yo Tim, this is the one I got and put into my ps3. I know it's only 320gb but it's 7200rpm and runs perfectly fine. I think the ps3 comes with seagate momentus 5200rpm drives inside. I did a bit of research last year but honestly I don't remember much in terms of advantages except there was a slight increase in loading time for games :)

the drive is like obsolete now but check the specs.

As far as externals, I've had experience with a few brands and for value I think the western digital portables (ie. usb powered) is the best bet (more gb per cost and fairly reliable). For a desktop external unit, I don't own this but it does look pretty damn sleek plus lots of space

My brother just jailbreaked his PS3 like a few days a go and we were discussing it.

So I asked what type of drive he was going to install for his games and such, he said none....

The thing is, the PS3 is build to handle a 5200rpm drive, installing a 7200rpm drive is a risk (overheating).

Modding the hardware in general is a risk btw.

His solution: a USB 3 TB external 7200rpm HD.

Sweet!

and if you can, can you actually use both an installed HD and have an external usb HD hooked up and have the option of using either at any time when saving anything?

Only reason I ask is because if I have an external hooked up at all times because of media on it but also having the option of saving game content to it would be cool, but I dont know if it works like that...?

Yea, that's exactly right... I talked to him earlier, and he said something abot FAT32 and NTFS, i'll ask him the full story tomorrow as an addition to my post.

But for now he has like 5 games that he plays straight of the external HD.

I'm not really sure tbh, I THINK that gamecontent is always saved to your internal HD, but since a jailbreaked PS3 can do crazy stuff.. I'll ask that aswell and post tomorrow.

Hey Tim, any word on how your HDD upgrade went for your PS3? I got it nearly FULL today. I only have about 2GB left! I own a PS3 phat 80GB retail. I'm sure I got it full from disc based video game installation data, DLC add-on and DLC video games. I hardly got any music/pics/movies on it believe it or not.

Now I was looking around Amazon/ebay looking for a new 2.5" hard drive SATA.. some cheap some expensive. I been debating which to get, a 5400rpm or 7200rpm. I think 320GB sounds fair for now. I been reading reviews saying 5400rpm works better than 7200rpm. On Amazon, 7200rpm buyers were not happy and stated it failed after a few months.. *sigh*

Anyone here have a confirmation if any of it is true?

Here's what I looked at so far:

Not sure about SATAII vs SATA but from I read, seems the PS3 will still accept it.. Anyone here upgraded their PS3 hard drive? I need at least a working ~320GB space.

I got a 500GB drive about a year ago for like $80 or something like that. I've got like 12 seasons of shows and 60GB of music and a lot of games installed and it's like 250GB used.

I got a external drive so it doesnt quite work.

all i know is you DO NOT want a HDD running 7200rpm's. it will get toooo hot.

I am looking for a HDD for mine that is 5400rpm and 750g or higher. I have a 60g PS3 and its about all out of space.

Thanks for the heads up Tim. I stayed within the 5400rpm speed on the drive. I ordered a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB. I was going to get a 320GB but for about $10 more I can have an additional 180GB. It should be delivered sometime before Christmas. 500GB that's 6x bigger!! I try to be frugal but I'm not a pro. I grabbed the WD Scorpio for $59. I hear tons of PS3 upgraders own that (size varies depending on the person.) I bought myself "Heavy Rain" which was the last game I got that ate a lot of disk space. Plus those damn patch version downloads also crunch up space. Grrrrrr.

Jesse, whatever you get let us know how it works for you dude.

I need to upgrade too...
I'll let you know how it goes once I finish transferring all my data on the new drive.

@Vassago, Sweet, I don't use it to save movies or music on it. At least for my 80GB one, lol.
For that I been streaming movies through "PS3 Media Server."

Perhaps with extra space on the new drive I can keep a couple of movies in the PS3. 0:)

Here's something I've been thinking about doing: They make external sata enclosures, like cell phone docks where the hard drive stands vertically. So here's what you do, get a superfast HDD and stick it in the dock. Run the dock to the PS3 via an SATA extension cable and bam, super fast and/or super large totally not overheating PS3.

2TB @ 5900 RPM = 80$ shipped

SEAGATE ST32000542AS Barracuda LP 2.0TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 5900 RPM 32MB Buffer Hard Drive Bulk
How the heck is that thing even that low in price? Makes you wonder.. let me know if it works for ya' Scheiss. For the bargain, I might get one for my laptop. The question rises however, will it work wonders on the PS3? I mean 2TB... nice.

Ok well I just finished backing up my data, upgrading drives (80GB --> 500GB), restoring back my data and it works fantastic. No problems. It's reliable and I even think it runs faster than my other drive (loading, installing etc.) I'm happy with my scorpio blue. If you got any questions let me know. Not much else to say but, great buy & it WORKS. :D
