Mod wins Rocket Punch 5

Fromundaman

I write too much.
During EVO weekend Cincinnati held an awesome event wherein the EVO livestream was broadcasted live on giant projector screens while we hosted tournaments and played games all day. After watching and getting hype over the EVO Injustice top 8 (And man we were getting hype! People were coming in from outside our community and even some from outside the store to see what was going on.), we decided to run our Injustice tournament. It was a blast, and now comes the part where I write up a full length novel about the event.

___________

Notable mentions:

-Eevee had to leave during the event for basic training and unfortunately could not compete.

-Kenshinoyo was MIA, probably out stacking paper (Wow, somehow even in text, I still feel too white to write that).

-WillDog returned to compete with us. He rarely manages the time to show up, but this time managed to come, bringing two new faces with him: SaucyJack and Craig. They expressed interest in coming back and I hope they do as they had potential/willingness to learn and work to get good.

-Despite initial confusion when I looked at the bracket, this was not GGA SaucyJack.

-Craig was immediately renamed to CRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIG! by yours truly without his consent.

-I managed to misread my own handwriting and caused a bracket error which was thankfully quickly resolved.

___________

We kicked off our event with a battle between Fromundaman's Joker and MPII's Batgirl/Zod combo. While Fromundaman is well versed in the Batgirl matchup, MPII's Yolo'ness with the character has caught him off guard in the past. Unfortunately for MPII, that did not work this time, as Fromundaman baited and punished cartwheels, teleports, interactibles and jumps to force a character switch.
MPII usually tries not to use Zod against Joker as Fromundaman has made no secret of liking that MU, but this time it didn't work out too badly.
The matches were rather close, but in the end Zod could not keep Joker out and Fromundaman advanced.

Next up we had a match that unfortunately was only possible thanks to the fact I randomize my brackets for all of our locals: Willdog vs CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG!
This was a zoning battle between Superman and Deathstroke with the occasional close range skirmish ending in someone getting sent back full screen to start zoning anew. Unfortunately for Superman, the zoning battle is one that Deathstroke wins, and so Willdog took the set over CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG!

Our next match found VGMtheVagabond's Raven facing off against Sonic Lionheart's plethora of characters. While I did not personally see this match, I know that VGM's Raven showed Sonic Lionheart that Hawkgirl shenanigans would not work on him, as well as that Nightwing's zoning cannot contest with Raven's. VGM took the set and moved on, leaving Sonic Lionheart scratching his head wondering what he would do next time he ran into Raven.

Meanwhile SaucyJack was facing off against Mod's Superman in another set I didn't see. Mod advanced.

On another setup, we had Red Cyclone's Wonder Woman taking on Willdog's Deathstroke. Willdog has an unfortunate aversion to the very concept of zoning and had been hating the fact he had needed to rely on it to beat CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG! in his previous match and therefore tried to adopt a more rushdown style this set. Against Wonder Woman this was a terrible idea. Through a mixture of his close range superiority and the incredible fundamentals he brought with him from Tekken, Red Cyclone defeated Willdog to move on.

This led to Fromundaman and Red Cyclone meeting in tournament once more. These two have played multiple times during the last few events, and usually Fromundaman wins. That said, the last event they had played twice, and while Fromundaman had managed to win the first time, Red Cyclone had DEMOLISHED him on the runback. This time, Fromundaman wanted vengeance while Red Cyclone was eager to prove he could repeat his previous performance. The set went back and forth, with Red Cyclone playing offensively trying to abuse his frametraps and range while Fromundaman played a much more defensive game, trying to trap Wonder Woman in teeth and catch her dashes/air dashes with gun and crowbars. Although the set was hard fought, the silly OTG nonsense, interactible usage and unblockable setups helped Fromundaman fraud his way to another victory.

On the other side of the bracket we saw VGMtheVagabond's Raven take on Mod's Superman in a titanic clash. These two have gone back and forth in the past and both were determined to take it. Despite Raven's strong zoning, Mod's great use of Superman's mobility allowed him to get in and bully Raven, giving him a close win.

In the loser's bracket (Heh, that bracket's full of losers...), we saw Sonic Lionheart face off against CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG! Sonic Lionheart took the set and reported it to the TO, who realized he'd misread his writing and that these two were not actually supposed to be playing and that CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG! and SaucyJack were in fact the ones who were supposed to play (I abbreviated them as "SL" and "SJ", and yeah sloppy writing... My bad!).
This set then took place and I sadly did not see it, but ultimately CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG! took it and had another chance to run it back against Sonic Lionheart.

Sonic Lionheart pulled out Zatanna this time around and zoned CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG!'s Superman out, occasionally pausing to put him into a vortex before once again returning to zoning. This was a quick 3-0 for Sonic Lionheart.

On the other side of the Loser's Bracket, MPII played Willdog. This was a Zod vs Deathstroke matchup and Willdog's lack of MU knowledge showed as MPII turned the set into a prolonged combo video, or rather the out-takes of one. American resets abound! MPII advances.

Next up we had VGMtheVagabond's Raven play against MPII's Batgirl/Zod combo. VGM's Raven has historically always made MPII rage and run to social medias to complain about how BS she is, and this time was no different. MPII started with Batgirl, but VGM's patient zoning and punishing style won out over MPII's reckless aggression (Dare I say impatient?) playstyle forcing a switch to Zod.
This proved to be no better, and VGM kept MPII's Zod full screen the entire match, punishing any and all attempts to draw guns or call trait. VGM moves on to loser's semi-finals.

Fighting for the chance to fight VGM's Raven we have Sonic Lionheart and his own personal bad matchup: Red Cyclone's Wonder Woman. These two have played many times before, and for some reason or another, Sonic Lionheart cannot seem to win. Personally I think he psyches himself out too hard, but it may also be that his style is too easy for Red Cyclone to read. Who knows?
What I do know is that Sonic Lionheart did not overturn fate, and after slapping Sonic Lionheart's Dick (GREYSON!) around a bit, Red Cyclone proved to be his tournament master once more.

Back on winner's side, we had a matchup we have not seen often in tournament. Despite them playing a lot of friendlies together, Mod and Fromundaman had managed to avoid each other often in tournament. In their friendlies they had gone back and forth, but this was no longer friendlies... This was tournament, this was srs bizns! What would be stronger, the Man of Steel or the Crowbar made of steel?

If you said the crowbar, then obviously you've never heard of Superman before. Also you would be wrong. Mod utilized Superman's mobility very well and abused the fact that Fromundaman had apparently forgotten how to backdash lasers to his advanatage and gave us a set that mirrored the Injustice story by murdering the clown, sending Fromundaman to losers.

While this Clownicide was occuring, VGM's Raven was taking on Red Cyclone's Wonder Woman in an intense set. Red Cyclone had been VGM's tournament master until our trip to GGA some months back where VGM apparently learned how to navigate the Wonder Woman matchup. Since then, Red Cyclone had not managed to beat VGM's Raven. On the flip side, Red Cyclone was finally starting to actually care about the game again instead of just coasting on his strong fundamentals. Would this renewed interest in the game be enough to defy fate and defeat VGM?
The answer is quite simply "no". Fate continued unabated as VGM's Raven did an excellent job of keeping Red Cyclone out, throwing birds out to bait dashes, then full comboing those dashes with Soul Crush.

This led to the battle of the roommates which seems to happen at all of our events, VGMtheVagabond vs Fromundaman. We here in Cincinnati are painfully aware of a rare piece of knowledge that most of the world is clueless about: Raven vs Joker may well be the most boring matchup in the world.
Now I know that sounds wrong; after all how do you take 2 hype characters, put them against each other and end up with a matchup that manages to be even more boring than the Green Lantern ditto? That is a great question. The answer is that Joker's every movement has to be either a mindgame or as a result of a blocked soul crush and that with a lifelead holding out revolver allows Joker to punish any action Raven can take.

This combined with the fact that both VGM and Fromundaman are willing to play very, very gay means that every single match EVERY TIME WE PLAY THIS MATCHUP will go to time or within 10 seconds of it unless we reach the corner in the first healthbar. Worst part is we usually go to the last lifebar of the last match too.
God just writing about this matchup makes me want to go do something more fun with my life, like masturbate with sandpaper.
Anyway, 3 hours later we arrived at the conclusion of this matchup and when the spectators woke up, Joker had won.

This led us to Grand Finals which would be the runback of Mod and Fromundaman. Fromundaman was hungry to run it back. He started with a strong showing, getting the first match secured in a very short time. Mod was having none of that though. He took a moment to rethink his gameplan and came back strong, running it right back for a solid victory.
The next match was incredibly close, going to the last 10 seconds and Mod had a slight life lead. He fired a straight laser and upon seeing the startup of the move, Joker threw a pie and- OH WHAT THE FUCK?! HOW ARE YOU BLOCKING WHILE STILL IN THE MOVE'S STARTUP? THIS IS BULLSHIT! STRAIGHT HORSE MANURE!

*Ahem* Sorry about that. It still upsets me that apparently it is straight up impossible for Joker to punish heat zap with super, EVEN THOUGH HE'S STILL LOOKING AT THE F&^(ING LASER THAT'S STILL RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM!

*Ahem* Anyway Superman won that round with that stupid shit. This mentally broke Fromundaman, but he made a valiant effort to come back. This match was close at the 15 second mark, but Fromundaman failed to take the hero's pixel which would haunt him. Mod channeled his inner homo-sexuality and in an act I must commend despite how much it infuriated me, Mod abused his mobility to run away from Fromundaman while occasionally turning around to punish him for trying to chase him down, and while there was no more than a 20% difference between the two, by the time we reached the 3 second mark Mod had 1-2% left on
his gray lifebar, making a comeback impossible. As such the tournament ended on flip stance dancing while the timer ran down. Mod had won, preventing Joker from winning a tournament once again.

Congratulations to Mod and his Superman (Who can apparently block mid-attack... *Grumble Grumble* )

That's it for this week's (Well last week... I haven't even started on this Thursday's writeup... Hopefully it'll be done this week) tournament results from here at Arcade Legacy in Cincinnati, Ohio.
I apologize we still don't have video footage. The struggle is real down here. *Hopefully* we'll have videos of some footage on the tournament we'll have on the 31st.

Oh and no, of course this write-up is not biased at all! What made you think it was?
