What's new

Louisiana / Baton Rouge Area

Are there any MK players in the Baton Rouge area, or anywhere in Louisiana for that matter? Everywhere I go it's ZOMG BLACK OPS 4 LIFE!!!! and it's getting pretty ridiculous.

There's a local Play N Trade store that occasionally has a MK tournament, but turnout is very low (like 4-5 people) and most of them don't know anything more than a 3-hit canned combo, and that's only if it doesn't involve any buttons other than 1. I won both of them without losing a round, and I was playing pretty bad too.

I'm nowhere near tournament level skill (I've hardly played since UMK3/Trilogy because I hated all the 3D ones), but I'd like to get something going in the area now that MK is awesome again. Problem is everyone just wants to play Black Ops all day and nothing else.

So I come here in hopes of finding some people in the area that would want to get together for some local tournaments and whatnot. I'm so sick of hearing about Black Ops around here it's nauseating.

Needless to say, the MK scene around here seems pretty non existent. My offline competition consists of one friend of mine that I've been playing MK with since MK2 in arcades, because nobody else plays.

So if anyone is in the area and wants to try and get something going, please post here.

There's a tournament tonight starting at 6:30pm in Baton Rouge at Gameware on College Drive. $5 entry and you have to bring your own controller & USB cord.

In addition to MK, they'll be playing SSF4AE, MVC3, and Super Smash Bros. According to the event's FB page there should be around 70-100 people. No idea how many will be playing MK.

Turns out they do these tournaments monthly (3rd Friday of each month) and have been doing so since 2001, and I was totally in the dark about it until two weeks ago.

Tournament was a blast. Most of the turnout was for SF and MVC3, and MK kinda got stuffed into the back of the store next to the Mario Kart (N64) tourney, which seemed to have at least as many people in it as MK did (thought it was Super Smash when I posted the other day but whatever).

Got eliminated by some guy named Vu that's apparently pretty well known around here (this was my first "real" tournament so I don't really know anybody). I was the only one to win a match against him the whole night, but he managed to 2-1 me and knock me out. He's probably the most patient person I've ever fought. Much respect to this guy.

It was pretty awesome, but for some reason it seems that MK doesn't get much respect in the big picture. I don't know if it's because it's an American made game and so many hardcore SF/Capcom fanatics secretly wish they were an anime character in real life or what. It just seems like a lot of them (not really at this tournament, just overall from what I've noticed) have this elitist attitude when someone brings up MK, like you're comparing a Pinto to a Rolls Royce or something. Not that SF isn't a badass game, but people just act like MK is just a total trash game like Time Killers or something. I'd probably agree when it came to the 3D MK games since they all sucked balls, but I really don't understand the MK9 hate. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

Hey guys, A.R.K. IV is coming up September 17th-18th in Jacksonville, AR! We are expecting ~200 people with games such as SSF4:AE, SF 3S:OE, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat 9, Melee, Brawl, BB:CS II, and more! Competitors are coming in from at least 6-7 several states to compete!

Note that our tournament is working on securing sponsorships from well known companies which will each be providing additional prizes and bonus pots for our tournaments. The Traveling Circus has expressed interest as of this time. Also, well-known regional modder DaRabidDuckie will be on hand to provide dual mods (PS3 <-> 360) for fight sticks.

If you have ANY questions, please PM me or post on the official tournament thread here: http://testyourmight.com/forum/showthread.php?10231-ARK-IV-MK9-SSF4-MvC3-Melee-Brawl-BB-CSII-More!&p=140733#post140733
I'd normally respond to replies on this thread, but I'm so busy with Med School that I don't have time (though I may check in once in a while if there's interest). Please try to make it and show your support not only for us, but for the regional MK community as a whole. Thanks guys!

I guess down in BR you guys have way more players than around here. I live up in the Monroe area and there is literally 0 support for Fighting games up here. It's all Call of Duty and Halo tournaments.

Here in Pineville theres some MK9 players, but they're like the average player. Talk about there mains and their biggest combo, and complain about Kung Lao.

But yea shooters reign here aswell.

They have this place called Gameland http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=100001716270199 they have rows of xbox's and PS3's. I've done mk9 1v1s there, and met a MvC3 player (who totally shit on me because I never played that game before, I took out one of his fighters because I looked at a tier list and picked some of those). Maybe somebody could convince them to hold a tournament, could be fun :)

heyyyy i'm karen and i live in lafayette and i started going to a store called anime and games central where there some fightin game players there but none of them play MK. i'm the only person who knows anything about MK since they all play tekken and marvel 3. i'd love to find people to play offline with but it doesn't seem like there are any in my area. i'd be more than happy to try and run events and bring my asus monitor and xbox (i don't have the game for ps3 and i play on an arcade stick anyway) and have people to play casuals with. i also have hookups to provide pizza. free pizza and playing mortal kombat with a girl should sound like fun right?

Finding offline players is hard. But they exist, if MK copies sold of the shelves at the stores in your town. Then people there play it. It's finding them that's the tricky part.

If you don't got money to spend to try and do a mini advertisement/mini tournament. Maybe there is a college campus or something nearby? where they have an area that you can set up games to play?

For instnace here in pensacola we got UWF, and anytime we set up gaming there and some new guy comes along to play a few. we ask them if they want to join our offline group. And thus gain a new member.

we hold little mini local tourneys and hope for fresh blood.

It's hard to start it though when you're all alone, if you can get atleast a starting group of 4. It makes the growing process easier. Because atleast you don't run the risk of running an event and it's just you and 1 other person (awkward!)

I just got my streaming equipment in today, so hopefully streaming some violence will help things start rolling again.

Planning on streaming as much offline as possible. Haven't really decided about online yet cause online makes everyone look like a scrub.

Hey will any of you guys be in New Orleans this weekend? It'd be fun to get some sets in with Injustice and MK.

Join the Louisiana Fighting Game Community Facebook page, that's the best way to keep up with what's happening locally.

There's a tournament today in Batom Rouge on Sherwood Forest Blvd at the laser tag place. MK and Injustice start in 2 hours I think.
