Duh. Let's hope MK10 can read the paint on our controllers.

This sort of thing shows up in a few places. After you beat ladder mode, the game tells you to push X to continue, but it actually wants you to push 3, so I had to push R1 to continue. There's other places I've seen it that I can't think of at the moment.
