Killer Instinct pros! I need your advice!

"I wore those colors before you"
Hello TYM,

I`ve been on the fence for over 2 months now on getting the new Killer Instinct (meaning i have to buy
the xbox one).

I am a ps4 guy but damn, the characters diversity and game mechanics intriuge me as hell.

Huge MK and KOF fan here and the fighting genre is my fav no question about it.

The thing is, i`ve tried SSF4 and its a bit slow for my taste.

I really like the combo system of KI ,characters and online code (based on what ive read so far)

My question is for people who have it and come from an MK background is it worth it to buy this game

especially with season 2 on the horizon, and is it fun and does it have a good replayability?

i need true honest opinions please.

thanks everyone!

I'm not a pro by any means on KI, but I've played enough at my friends house to give you my opinion.

It's not as fast as MK/IGAU/KOF in terms of gameplay, not even close.

The mechanics are spot-on though. It's a challenging game, and it's rewarding once you get it down.

If you don't have a X1 though, is it worth buying an entire console for it? No, absolutely not.

However if you have one, it's definitely a game to have in your library. I know that sounds contradictory. It's a game that if you have the console for it, get it. But if you don't, you won't lose sleep at night knowing you don't have it.

*I'm not a pro, but I play a ton of KI: here's my thoughts*

  • The single-player AI is the worst I've ever seen in a fighting game. You can block infinite the AI with any character, and it auto-guess all 50/50's 100% of the time, so it basically becomes a derpfest. Only buy this game if you can get your entire value out of online play.
  • The game does have amazing netcode. The best I've seen in any fighting game to date, apart from maybe Skullgirls. It's really fantastic.
  • The game tends to play like SF4 in terms of footsies, however, it's much faster because it's much safer for you to go from long-sweep range to throw-range. This tends to be because more characters have moves specially designed to get them in closer while simultaneously keeping them at + frame advantage: so players are less hesitant to get in.
  • On the topic of SF4: Shadow counters are everything focus moves should be. They are a powerful defensive option that allows momentum to shift between attacker and defender, however unlike focus attacks in SF4 the risk/reward is more balanced in a way that means the offensive player need not be overly wary of them- so this doesn't make the pace too slow and methodical out of fear of pressing a button.
  • Right now, all the characters are fun to play, and very well designed- however it seems the developers wanted to start and get down all the basic archetypes before creating more interesting archetype-mixes. Sabrewulf, Jago, Thunder, Orchid, Glacius, Sadira are all basically run of the mill archetypes for Rushdown, Shoto, Grappler, Footsies, Zoning, and Vortex respectively. You don't have as many interesting blends that turn into crazy gameplay styles apart from Spinal and Fulgore at the moment- each of which have much more dynamic, less-defined gameplay archetypes. I love Sabrewulf and Orchid (my mains) but admittedly their moveset is quite basic.
  • Balance is spot-on. Even for a game with a small roster, the developers ought to be commended for this. Sabrewulf is slightly above the rest of the cast, and Sadira has an exploit- but neither of these are big enough to be serious problems.

KI is the best fighter I have ever played, hands down. Is it worth buying an entire new console JUST for KI? No, I guess not but.... damn you're not going to spend much time regretting it once you're playing :D

I bought my X1 for KI and have no regrets. I guess it comes down to how much 400$ means to you, and that's going to be variable between people. I had the recreational money to spend and so I went with it. Honestly the netcode is amazing, I love MK always have but god damn it was horrible to play online. I live with my girlfriend and most of my gaming friends have moved away, so good online is important to me as I only play casual wii u games locally. Aside from KI I occasionally use it for Netflix or watching blurays. I plan on picking up destiny and I'm sure I'll be picking up the Halo stuff as well. And of course MKX will be coming out the beggining of next year. So I know I'll continue to find value in it.

Again at the end of the day it's your call, how much does 400$ mean to you. You'll also have to factor in at least 20$ for the combo breaker pack to buy all of the characters.

Its cool.

I got the xbone for this. So yeah you can say "dont get xbone for KI" but unless youre short sighted youll realize there is other games coming out for the xbone youll want to play. This thing will be the current gen for many years.

Tbh money is not an issue for me and alot of people seem to miss the point that is killer instinct worth it as a fighting game or not, and not the (you have to buy an xbox onr for one game) issue.

im talkin about replayability and accessability, is there any ground breakin bugs that render the game unplayable?

or am i gonna have so much fun reading the frame data and get sucked into the game coz its so much fun like mk9?

Nothing makes the game unplayable. Replayability comes down to what your preferences are. The online is great, the story mode and offline modes suck. For me I play fighting games to play against other people so I find it has plenty of replayability. In terms of accessability I feel the game has one of the best linear learning curves in the genre. The base core system is easy to understand and you can get into doing decent damage almost immediately and as you become more comfortable the more finite mechanics come into play. The Dojo is one of the best tutorial systems I've seen, it goes through all of the very technical mechanics the game has to offer.

says you

it's the only reason I own an xboner
The thing is: he already owns a PS4.

I bought my Xbox One solely for KI as well, but if I already owned a next-gen system that played 95% of the games the other system played, it'd be a different story. So I was getting all the value of a next gen system + having a game I really wanted. If I already had a PS4, I'd basically be spending $400 for a single game- instead of just shelling out the price difference between the two consoles.
