Each year, IGN commences on a sizable task: taking all the releases of the year (on several different platforms), condensing them down to a chosen few, and agreeing on what they believe to be the best title in each of a litany of categories. The annual exercise brings with it some anticipation, a good deal of discussion (and sometimes controversy), and some awards to line the trophy cases of a group of lucky developers and publishers each year.

While IGN also holds a public vote for People's Choice awards for each category, there is no guarantee that the People's awards and the IGN staff awards will align (and usually some of them don't). So it is a large credit to NetherRealm Studios that this year, Injustice: Gods Among Us has garnered the awards for Best PS3 Fighting Game, Best Xbox 360 Fighting Game, Best PC Fighting game and Best Vita Fighting Game, in addition to winning the People's Choice Awards in all 4 categories.

While the competition was narrowed this year, Injustice proved its might after it's April beginnings, becoming one of the top-selling console games in any genre for months following launch and solidifying itself as a Top 3 mainstay of the fighting game community's tournament scene.
"In what was mostly a transitional year for the fighting genre as a whole, NetherRealm’s follow-up to their Mortal Kombat reboot stood tall. Though there were certainly other fighting games worth playing, none brought the mix of single-player content, and multiplayer depth that Injustice: Gods Among Us did. On paper, the concept of rounding up DC’s finest to duke it out under a modified Mortal Kombat engine sounded too fun to actually work, but the end result proved to be both more over-the-top and more mechanically nuanced than NetherRealm’s last outing. Mix in one of the most satisfying stories ever told in the genre, and the result is the best ... fighter of 2013."

Congratulations and best wishes to everyone at NetherRealm (including designers, producers, testers, and everyone else involved), to all fans of the game, and to lovers of the DC universe. It was a great year for Injustice overall -- and it finished with a great deal of momentum as the game, the community and the comic set boldly forth into 2014!
