In Need of General Knowledge

Brand new to fighting games. So far I'm in love and I'm willing to put in the grind to get as good as possible.

I already know the general button code and terminology..mostly.. but I've been wondering how to do things like cancel special.

I'm in need of general knowledge and I'm sure I'm not the only one as there are a ton of new people such as me to this community willing to learn. So if you're a veteran willing to help us noobies, share what you know here.

Whatever gets your attention in fighting games, you are more then free to ask for help.
Is there anything specifically you wish know about fighting games? Any character recommendation you need?
Please ask whenever you want to.

I main Kung Lao Buzzsaw and I'm decent just not at setups or complex combos. I have the basics, I just need to build on them. For instance whats the most efficient way to start a combo, and I read people talking about 'cancels' and I know the notaion is xx but how is it performed?

Thanks you its really appreciated, I guess the hardest thing to get for me is what to do in each situation. I find myself doing the complete wrong set ups and its increasingly frustrating. I'm limited to three combos that Ive ALMOST completely mastered for Kung Lao

Im not OP but this is my first fighting game and I have a couple of questions -

1) What are mix ups?
2) What is/are tech/techs?
3) I mostly have been playing grandmaster sub-zero and have been spending a lot of time working on a BnB. I have trouble landing certain parts consistently, especially B1 - 2 ice ball. I always seem to drop it after the first punch. Any tips to practice?
4) Last question- I like sub zero but am open to new characters. I generally like big brawlers such as goro and ferra/torr. Is there a character that has a very comboLESS playstyle? I would like a character that has combos and one that doesnt.

I play on xbox, by the way. Thanks for any responses

Also, I find myself always trying for just those combos I know, what are the best things to do in between those opportunities for combos. Othee than standinf and blocking like myself?

To do a cancel, just input the special move you want to cancel into after a normal attack or string. Usually you input the special attack before the normal attack connects. The xx means cancel, but it's not an actual input, it's just telling you to cancel and not wait until it recovers. Some strings can be canceled and others cannot. For example, sweeps (B4) and uppercuts (D2) can't be cancelled in MK games.

The first thing to do is to try experimenting other ways to use the combos. I know what is like to be limited to three only.
Each combo for Kung Lao is good, it just depends on the situation your in.
Some basic combos are good for pushing them away, while others are good for setups while others are good for enders.
I recommend to practice with him little by little with the combos until you see something good that fits you play style with him.
We all have our own play style. Another thing, don't be frustrated, is just a matter of good practice and before you know it, you will do your combos and moves just like you want them.

It's pretty simple, just MB B2+04, Ji5, 114 Slide into Teleport (204% damage)

But if that combo isn't enough just look into the forums on your specific character. You're on the right path and the perfect site. There are tons of information scattered across the forums for both beginners and advanced players.

Now for this kind of situation.
If you happen to be blocking a lot and you don't want that, try and see what your opponent will do next to you while blocking.
If you can read his next move, you might just be able to grab him and put him in the corner and he will be the blocking next.
However, if you think you can't, you can try stopping his attacks on you by doing low attacks on him such as D-1. D-3 or D-2 to slow him down.
I'm sure you know this, but if your blocking low attacks, he may jump and attack you with one hit that sends you in the air and there he starts to combo you while on the corner. That attack is known as a overhead. Overheads are attacks that will only hit if you are blocking low attacks, and if they hit, they will lunch you in the air for combos/juggles. If you happen to see him jumping and going for a overhead, then the best thing to do is to do D-2 to push him back and try to turn the tables around. Is okay to block, but remember there are ways to break the block and still attack, the same goes for you when attacking nonstop.

So normals and strings (series of moves) can cancelled into specials. Cancelled means your move doesn't do the recovery animation and does the special animation immediately. You do it by pressing your string or normal and the special in a sequence.

1) What are mix ups?
A mix up is a situation where your opponent or you have to react to whatever move you throw, being a grab, a cross up (doesnt really apply for MK but whatever), an overhead or a low. Your pressure is composed of mix up situations. It's not the same as a 50/50 where it becomes a guess.
2) What is/are tech/techs?
Tech is a specific setup/situation you can use during your gameplay. It can be character specific (like certain moves being exploitable against a character) or general situations (like corpse hopping or inverting wake ups).
Teching a throw means countering a grab. You do it by pressing one of the face buttons depending on the direction you're being thrown.
Tech roll is rolling on the ground after you're being knocked down.

Cant help you with SZ combos.
Learn combos, don't shy away from learning the game.

It's not all about combos. You have to watch your spacing, you have to pressure, you have to punish whatever your opponent does. Combos are just the reward but they're a small part of your gameplay.

I knew how overheads worked but that honsetly just helped immensely, those are the types of things i've been struggling with but I guess I could go from that D2 counter to EXspin into my main midscreen......... I honestly didnt think of counters like that lol

If your looking to use the EXspin, you do an overhead to them and then do a 2 or 3 hit combo, then use the EX to lunch them in the air. Once in the air, you can do D-1 or D-2 while in the air to follow it up with drive kick and then combo it up while they are still on the air or just give a 2 hit then use another EXspin if you so feel like it.

Yea my midscreen goes something like:
B321 spin(DF1)njp jk dk B321/F23 DB2(low saw) and its like a 42% or something but I could make it a one bar by using EXspin as a wakeup and cutting out the B321 at the beggining.

If you can do that, then you can do so much more. With every little bit of practice, you will learn even new mixups and setups.
Remember that is what training mode is there for. To help you practice until you perfect your play style, and don't let others tell you otherwise about that is lame or anything!

I think that this site should have some mkx 101 guides for new players.
the more people get into mkx, the better for the community
