Hello, I'm new to these forums and fairly new to fighting games in general. I just wanted to go over some of my frustration and maybe get some advice from anyone willing to share any.

I understand I'm new to fighting games, but I've always been somebody ready for online gameplay. I've found that I have a tremendous amount of pvp anxiety in MKX. I've only really played Scorpion because he's the character I'm most familiar with as far as MK is concerned. Anyways I found myself doing some of his basic combos leading to a teleport pretty well about 8/10 times in single player variations of the game. However, when I try this combo in an online match it only works 1/10 times if I'm lucky. I find opponents I face online are very fast and seem to get hits on me before I have time to think even. I'm often confused by my opponent.

I do understand the basics of the game such as overheads on crouching targets and various other mechanics, I'm not too familiar with jumping attacks, I rarely jump. I will admit that.

I guess what I'm trying to find out is how long is this pvp anxiety going to plague me? What are some things others have done to overcome it? How do I smooth out my directional and button pressing so I can have confidence in my combos? I've spent much time in the training mode of the game.

I've always been my own biggest critic, and I really want to get better at MKX, mainly because I enjoy the game.

Thanks for reading and any comments. :)
I play on PS4, PSN: erdem_atem

One thing that I encountered today was a sub-zero player who would alternate between sliding and a jump attack. I would crouch and block to defend against it. He would instead do a jump kick which would connect because i'm crouching, but I was anticipating the slide again. He would sometimes slide twice yes after i stood up to block the jump attack which I though was coming.

I couldn't really get my footing to counter attack, I tried sweeping with scorpion's left, right circle. But alas the special failed because I'm either inputting the combination wrong or he would get a hit on me instead.

It's completely normal, in fighting games it's very important to know what your opponent is capable of, it's going to make you anxious because you don't know what they can do. i personally went through each characters move lists and looked at all their combo strings and special moves to see how they work, where they can hit me from, how to block it and how to punish couple this with some online experience and eventually it will go away. i know it sounds time consuming, but fighting games are long term. practice as much as you can and realize you're sticking with this game for the long haul and it will pay off, trust me. If you don't wanna spend that much lab time, try going to character specific forums and try finding sparing partners to teach you the match ups and what to do via online match ups. Utilize youtube to see what other scorpion players are doing differently and you'll improve quickly.

You only get smarter by playing a smarter opponent
You can punish his slide. Once you do that he will be scared to do it once he sees that he is losing alot of health due to you punishing it. Also if he jumps you need to be ready to anti air him so that way you closing the gaps in his gameplay and then you can start your offense once you have him scared to jump or slide!

Have you by any chance watched any high level play at all?
I don't believe I have for MKX, various other games. I should have thought of that haha! Yeah, I'd really like to see how people punish sub-zero's slide and jump attacks in general. Thanks for all the comments guys, I've taken a mental note of it all and will study after work.

I can sympathize with that, when I got into MK9 I felt the same way. Took a long time to become confident and be able to judge and react to everything going on. Unfortunately for you MKX is much faster than MK9, but the only thing that'll help is playing and getting accustomed to the character's skillsets and game mechanics. What also helps is learning your own options like the back of your hand, the moment you don't have to consciously think about what you need to and you just naturally react as if you were doing something with your own body that is the point in which you can get past that overwhelming feeling you're getting right now.

As for that anxiety, I still have that sometimes, it'll be there anytime you're introduced something overwhelming or unknown, anything you can't find an instant solution to or that is shutting your options down.

Just play, watch high level play, keep learning your own character and in time you will get used to it. Unfortunately that's the best advice I can give. It took me a long time to get accustomed to it, I've played various fighting games and watched tons and tons of online play for each and there was no moment where I had some sudden realization that made the game much easier, it's a steady progress of personal skill and knowledge of the game.

EDIT: Also, take notes of what your opponent does that's stumping you. Make notepad/word doc, whatever and write it down. You also have replays I believe in this game, watch your past games, analyze why you lost, test if you can find punishes for certain moves they did, think about what you could of done better(maybe you played too aggressively, jumped too much, didn't block hix mixups, dropped combos, didn't cross up jump correctly, etc). Also, use these forums, ask questions, if you're not sure about something go to your character forum, make a thread, post in the general discussion, etc. Hell even go to the character that's stumping you and ask people how to deal with a certain option that character is beating you with. Again, hope this helps. Keep at it, it'll only get better, just have the right mindset. Learn from every mistake and every loss and in time you'll feel much more comfortable and competent.

EDIT 2: Also, I wanted to say, have gameplan for your character, find his/her strength's and weaknesses. For instance, I play Quan, I excel at mixups and zoning but am incredibly weak when I'm waking up and from close/mid range in certain matchups. Find what your character does well, what their character does well and think of how you're going to best play in favor of your strengths.
