how to win air to air jk's and air punches?

I always seem to loose air to air jump kicks/punchs. How come? Am I pressing my kick/punch to slow or too fast or somethin?

Earlier ones tend to hit first.

so in this case i am better off immediately hitting punch or kick once i jump if i know he will try to jump kick?

Whoever presses the button first obviously hits first.

First hits and the higher person get priority.
