How important is soundtracks in a video game to you?

I've been wondering this because it seems people, besides older generations don't care for soundtracks. You rarely hear soundtracks being a huge point when reviewers give their opinions about a game. I even have a scumbag friend who plays games with music(and sometimes all sound) off.

Me personally, soundtrack is a BIG part to video games. For me it determines a game's memorability(for a lack of a better term).

All my favorite games have very good to GODLIKE soundtracks. And since I've been into a lot of non-vocal music lately, video game soundtracks are flooding my phone when I'm listening to music.

How about you? How does a game's soundtrack affect your opinion of a game?

I'd say it is a good factor in my opinion. Though there are certain cases where the music is really bad, but it doesn't take away from what I like about the game, as is the case with MK9. (And only MK9, as far as I recall)

It's important that the soundtrack isn't terrible.

One of the factors of a good soundtrack is how often the same song is used in a game. ME3 theme was sick but they used it so many times. Same with MGS4.

I'm 50 50 on it.
I mean.... typically a good game tends to have a good soundtrack....

I can't think of a good game that I enjoyed playing... that had a shitty soundtrack. Well... i hate MegaMans stuff.. it annoys me.

I only use characters with wakeup scoops.
Its important in fighting games since catchy/blood pumping beats just make the fight that much more entertaining/suspenseful. This is one thing I enjoyed about Street Fighter IV and some of Tekken 6/Tekken Tag 2. There were stages which the music made fights that much more epic, especially in competitive settings. Mortal Kombat 9 music isn't bad per se but its too damn subtle and just....bland. (Save for Shang Tsung's Gardens theme, that was awesome).

It's part of the experience. For example, Halo's soundtrack always gives me the chills.

Remember Alan Wake? That game was garbage, but the soundtrack was awesome. The only redeeming factor lol.

Shadow Priest
Truthfully, it doesn't matter. It gets annoying after a while anyway. Good or not.

Edit: RPG/Adventure needs a good soundtrack.

Shooters, Fighting, Sports... after a while the soundtrack become annoying or you barely notice it.

I notice with some of my friends and their younger brothers the older generation seems to think sound track is a big part of the game. It honestly sets the mood. I can say the amount of times I played an old SNES, NES or Sega Genesis games and had the music stuck in my head.

Besides Subway and That 1 stage with the MK logo in the BG, I also feel MK9's soundtrack is very weak. But it's a rare exception.

Alan Wake was awesome. How DARE you, sir.

I disagree, Halo 2 and 3's soundtracks were godlike and Soul Calibur's soundtracks always deliver.

  • HOW DID THE LADY INVENTED A SPECIAL PAINTING THAT CAN ONLY BE SEEN BY "THOSE TOUCHED BY THE DARKNESS".
  • HOW DID THE LADY MANAGED AN ENTIRE POWER STATION, LIVED THERE, AND NO ONE TOLD HER NOTHING.
  • WHY WOULD THE POLICE SHOOT ALAN WAKE WITHOUT EVEN ASKING, OR EVEN CHECKING IF THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG.
  • WHY WOULD HE RUN AWAY IF HE DID NOTHING. WHY WOULD THE POLICE CHASE HIM IF HE DID NOTHING.
  • HOW COME THOUSANDS OF WORKERS AND TOWNSFOLK DISAPPEARED AND NO ONE NOTICED.
  • HOW DID NO ONE NOTICED WHEN A GIANT TORNADO OF EVILNESS WAS MAKING TRUCKS EXPLODE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TOWN.
  • WHAT THE FUCK WAS UP WITH THE ENDING, WRITING SHIT IN THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN? WRITING HIS OWN LIFE IN A PARALLEL UNIVERSE FOREVER AND EVER? WHAT? DAVID BOWIE?
  • WHY WERE THEY FACES ALL SCREWED UP?
  • HOW COME AN OLD LADY CARRIED SUPER HEAVY CHESTS FULL OF AMMO AND BATTERIES TO CAVES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WOODS?
  • WHY WAS EVERYONE MENTALLY CHALLENGED?
And gameplay wasn't that fun, it became kinda boring after doing the same for 6 hours, there wasn't even a challenge and the amount of pretentiousness was too damn high.

soundtracks don't matter to me too much, but when it's good it does enhance it a lot. like the final battle part in Mass Effect 2 where they're flying the ship in, it made that amazing. the main menu song is awesome too.

Because it was all scripted. And Thomas Zane wrote stuff like this. Illogical things and full of plot holes. It was even hinted in one of the 'Night Springs' easter eggs.

Gameplay was alright, I think it could've used more puzzles and should've been given a more survival horror element.'Cause I breezed through Nightmare mode while killing all enemies.

Faces were made by an NRS employee.

Characters were lovable, how DARE you.

And lastly,

Could you imagine if Mario or Sonic games had no or shitty soundtracks? Mario's above ground theme is so old yet people still recognize it in a heartbeat. As for Sonic games, I think almost all soundtracks are good.(Green Hill , Emerald Hill, Angel Island, Mushroom Hill, pretty much every first zone in Sonic games)

A great OST can put a game over the top or it can put you to sleep. Go play MM2 on NES and then tell me the game didn't benefit from an amazing soundtrack.

I accept nothing. Nothing is inevitable.
Soundtrack is HUGE!!!

Just look at how good it made this game:

(and my favorite)

Seriously, Mortal Kombat Deception had some one of the best soundtracks ever.

MK9 soundtracks SUCK!!!!!!
Good stuff, man. Those soundtracks from MKD are awesome. You just forgot these ones I think :D

...and many others from MKD.

I really miss those arenas in MK9 hehehe

In my opinion, MKD had the best soundtracks ever seen of all the franchise so far. They were such a deep and dark soundtracks, perfect to MK.

MK9 has some good soundtracks as well, my most favorite ones in the game are "Character select screen" and "Shang Tsung's garden".

Shang Tsung's garden theme has got to be remembered, it's just wonderful.

For me, soundtracks are absolutely very important in a game, it makes the game more attractive and brings more life to the environment...
