How I view tier lists

It reminds me of a political pundint on a corporate news channel expressing their opinion as a matter of fact. It seems to me these tier lists actually damage the perception of many characters. For instance everyone places joker at the bottom, every time. This puts mr funny man in a box that no one wants to look very deep into because he's terrible. Had there been no tier lists saying how terrible he is, possibly people would have actually advanced his game, but as it is, he's largely unplayed. I know he has problems, but I like to look at the solution and not the problem.

These tier lists change with every tournament, just as a pundints view changes with every political gaffe. Tier lists are purely subjective unless you are actually collecting data and doing actual statistics on matchups. I know this has been done in the past, but that's not what people want to hear. People don't watch news shows for the facts, but to hear opinion. If that's what you want, that's fine, but I think these tier lists don't even mean anything. How can you have 8 in a top 5? If I asked you what your favorite 5 fruits are and you named 8 fruits, I'd think you were retarded. I understand this isn't completely analagous, but it makes as little sense to me.

Also these matchups are more complicated than just assigning BIGnumber-SMALLnumber and saying that's what it is. Look at the difference in the way theo plays superman and someone who is more rushdown oriented like KDZ. You can't assign a number to superman matchups unless you account for the player. You cannot remove the player from the tier list, there is no matchup without 2 players!

I understand as humans we are chatterboxes and cannot help but to talk about a thing like who is best and worst and everything in between, but I do wonder if talk about tier lists can make the matchup closer to what you say it is, than if you had said nothing, and to what degree.

What do you think?
